Lemlem began in 2007 with Ethiopian-born supermodel, actress, and activist Liya Kebede. Meaning “bloom” in Amharic, Kebede founded Lemlem to preserve the art of traditional weaving in Ethiopia as well as offer work opportunities to local artisans. Now the airy pieces of the brand are sold in numerous boutique shops, including Nordstrom.
Check out how one of their finely woven pieces, the ‘Bara’ smocked top, are styled to become part of your summer wardrobe.
1. Smocked Top
This breezy shirt is super chic and comfy, with its loose fit, 3/4 length-sleeves, and an elegant bateau neckline to expose more skin during those sweltering days. We love the peach stripes the most, a cool color choice for the summer.
2. Straw Fedora
Yes, you read that right. It’s a ‘packable’ fedora. True to its name, the ‘Nomad’ hat makes a great traveling accessory for its easy packability while its waxed Shantung straw helps it snap back to its classy shape as soon as you need it.
3. Colorful Coin Purse
You never bring your perfectly partitioned wallets to your summer destination, it’s just not chill enough. This cheerful Guatemalan coin purse is perfect for easily stashing loose change and cash for when you’re just walking around flea markets or scouring for snow cones on the board walk.
4. Large Bright Clutch
This striking turquoise leather clutch is the easy way to chic this summer. Its simple style makes it versatile for any outfit, plus it’s extremely roomy for summer essentials like sunglasses, sunblock, a digital camera, etc. Try it for the evening as well, with that new maxi or LBD.
5. Surf Shorts
When you’re wearing something breezy like Lemlem’s ‘Bara’ top, it’s only right that you pair it with an equally simple pair of surf shorts. Faherty’s pair is made out of featherweight corduroy that gives them an easy, lived-in feel.
6. Charm Bracelet
Puka shells, pearls, and other colorful trinkets make this charm bracelet look like a bunch of treasures you would find on the beach. It’s obviously handmade so it can get you inspired to make your own as you go about your summer adventure.
7. Transparent Sunglasses
Leave the dark-framed shades for the fall. These transparent sunglasses are not only easy on the eyes, they’re made out of thermoplastic memory polymer so they’re light and don’t break as easy.
This Ikat and block-printed sarong is the perfect companion for those summer road trips where one suddenly feels an impulse to swim at every beach they pass. It functions as a great cover-up, as well as a mini picnic blanket for seaside rest stops.
