In an August 2019 interview with WWD, Zendaya opened up about what Idole meant to her following the release of a picture for Lancome‘s Idole fragrance campaign: “I personally think that an idol — and who your idol should be — is yourself really.

“An idol is whatever definition that you want to make it for yourself. I think it’s important to make it for yourself and not allow people to define what it is for you,” Zendaya adds. “I always say my idol is my future self. I don’t know who she is yet, I haven’t met her yet, but I know she’s there and she’s waiting for me in the future.”

The biracial actress, who was raised by an African-American father and Claire Stoermer, who has German and Scottish ancestry, also discussed her self-confidence and revealed a surprising fact about her mother in an interview with Instyle.

“Confidence takes time. A lot of people would be like, “Why don’t you just love yourself?” or “Why don’t you just feel better?” That stuff is much easier said than done. Growing to understand and appreciate yourself takes time. And we’re all figuring it out,” she said.

Zendaya mentioned her mother as an example to prove that the process can take a long time.

“My mom did it at 50. I call it her butterfly moment. She became confident and got more in touch with who she was at 50. It can happen at any point in your life. Just don’t rush that process. Let yourself feel things and know it’s OK to be a little slower than others,” the Disney Channel sitcom Shake It Up star confessed about her mom.

Claire Stoermer, who was born on March 24, 1964, previously worked as an elementary school teacher and as the house manager for the California Shakespeare Theater in Orinda, California. She filed for divorce from Zendaya’s father, Kazembe Ajamu Coleman, in August 2016.
