Glee’s co-creator Ryan Murphy wrote the part of Rachel Berry for Michele after being impressed by her performance in Broadway’s Spring Awakening.

At the age of 22, Lea officially got the role in late 2008 after blowing everyone away with her version of Les Miserables’ “On My Own” in the audition in Los Angeles.

“I start singing my first song, and the piano player skipped through the second verse, so right in the middle of my song, I was like, ‘Excuse me!'” she says in a featurette on the Glee Season 1 DVD, Vol. One: Road to Sectionals (available on Amazon). “Very Rachel Berry!”

“I come from a world of musical theater, so I never really thought I would be on a television show!”

We must say that we are quite digging this monochrome look on her.

The actress later changed to a much more revealing dress by Bec & Bridge, which she styled with shoes from Casadei.
