Maria Sharapova was suspended from tennis for 15 months after testing positive for meldonium, a drug added to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) prohibited list just weeks before her positive test.
Sharapova had been taking meldonium for over a decade to treat a magnesium deficiency and irregular heartbeat, but she was unaware that it was now banned. Her irregular heartbeat is a condition called supraventricular tachycardia (SVT).
Sharapova’s agent, Max Eisenbud, admitted failing to check the updated list of banned substances and apologized for the oversight.
Sharapova expressed regret for her mistake but maintained that she had never intended to cheat. Her suspension was initially set for two years, but it was reduced to 15 months in October 2016 after she reached an agreement with WADA.
She was eligible to return to tennis on April 26, 2017, and she made her comeback at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany.
