Marion Cotillard rarely disappoints on the red carpet, and her looks at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival were no exception.

The then-40-year-old French actress stepped out to attend a photo call for her 2016 French film, From the Land of the Moon (French: Mal de pierres, literally “disease of the stones”), held at the Palais des Festivals.

It was filmed in France and Switzerland during the summer of 2015 when she was 39 years old. Marion Cotillard celebrated her 40th birthday on September 30, 2015.

The English title comes from an excerpt from the 2006 novella “Mal di Pietre” by the Italian writer Milena Agus on which the film is based: “Her whole life she had been told that she was like someone from the land of the moon…” In the context of the novel, the French title “Mal de pierres” refers to the protagonist Gabrielle’s kidney stones.

Marion Cotillard, who portrays Gabrielle in the film, was joined at the event by her co-stars Louis Garrel and Alex Brendemuhl. It was her first French movie in four years following the 2012 romantic drama film Rust and Bone (French: De rouille et d’os).

The award-winning actress traded her typically girly look for an edgy, grungy style by donning a distressed denim jacket dress by Belgian fashion label Filles à Papa.

The French actress teamed the thigh-grazing number with a pair of Mulberry shoes, which amped up the rock-and-roll vibe of the look in addition to boosting her height.

Marion Cotillard, who in 2008 won the Academy Award as best actress for her portrayal of legendary chanteuse Edith Piaf in “La Vie en Rose,” kept everything else about her look simple.

She casually wore her brunette tresses down in tousled waves and sported minimal makeup, including just a hint of blush and a swipe of pink lipstick.

The ever-chic French beauty made sure to put a more glamorous display for the premiere of her movie, which is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Milena Agus.

She posed on the red carpet with her co-stars as well as the film’s director, Nicole Garcia.

Marion, who made her Hollywood debut in the 2003 American fantasy comedy-drama film Big Fish, looked the epitome of class and elegance in the floor-length gown, which featured long sleeves, a cowl-neck back, and a thigh-high slit that showed off some flesh.

She finished her look with a sleek, side-swept ponytail and deep red lipstick. This was a far cry from her look during the photo call earlier in the day!
