During the early phase of her career, Meagan Good served as a background actor on TV shows such as “Doogie Howser, M.D.” and “Amen.”

At the age of 13, she made her film debut in the 1995 American buddy stoner comedy film Friday.

Two years later, she received critical acclaim for her role as the troubled teenager Cisely Batiste in the American Southern Gothic drama film “Eve’s Bayou,” directed by Kasi Lemmons.

Kasi Lemmons wrote the screenplay for “Eve’s Bayou” in 1993, inspired by her childhood trips to Louisiana and the unique history of the state.

The film was not autobiographical but had elements from Lemmons’ family experiences, and the writing process was therapeutic for her. When the film failed to attract interest from studios or directors, Lemmons decided to direct it herself, and Samuel L. Jackson came on board as both a producer and lead actor.

Jackson was drawn to the unique character of Louis Batiste and was interested in playing a romantic and glamorous man. The film was finally financed by Trimark Pictures in 1996.

“When the [Eve’s Bayou] script I was playing Eve because I was 10, and they didn’t get the funding for it for three and a half years later. So I was like, I have to play Cisely,” Meagan Good said in an interview.

This performance earned her two award nominations, including her first nomination for an NAACP Image Award. Jurnee Smollett, who portrayed Eve Batiste, and Meagan Good would later star together in the 2005 American comedy-drama film Roll Bounce.

Jurnee Smollett and Jake Smollett are siblings in real life. They have four brothers and sisters, who are all performers in the entertainment industry. All six Smollett siblings (Jurnee, Jake, Jocqui, Jojo, Jazz, and Jussie) appear on the Food Network show Smollett Eats.
