Airport style gives celebrities a different footwear challenge than the red carpet: the shoes still have to complete the outfit, but they also have to work for travel. Standing 5’9″ (175.3 cm) and wearing a US size 11, Heidi Klum demonstrated three very different approaches at Los Angeles International Airport between August 2014 and April 2016, moving from platform sandals and flared jeans to Versace Medusa high-top sneakers and, finally, burnt-orange flatform wedges.

Seen together, the three LAX looks show how dramatically footwear can change familiar travel staples. Klum paired jeans with both platforms and sneakers, while her orange wedges turned cropped printed trousers into a much more shoe-focused look.

1. 2014: Brown Platform Sandals With Flared Jeans and an Olatz Silk Shirt

On August 15, 2014, Klum arrived at LAX in a light blue Olatz silk pajama-style shirt, pairing the relaxed button-down with Genetic Denim “Leaf” flare jeans and brown platform sandals.

The long, slightly flared jeans almost covered the shoes, leaving the open toes and platform soles visible beneath the hems. Rather than making the pajama-inspired shirt the entire story, the platforms added height and structure to the relaxed outfit. Our guide to platform heels explains how raising the forefoot and heel changes a shoe’s overall height, pitch, and proportions.

Klum completed the look with aviator sunglasses, oversized hoop earrings, and a tan Hermès Birkin bag. Her silk shirt also reflected the broader fashion interest in adapting sleepwear for daytime dressing, a look other celebrities explored with pajama-inspired separates.

2. February 2016: Versace Medusa High-Tops With Cropped Amo Jeans

By February 1, 2016, Klum had switched from platforms to sneakers for another arrival at LAX, this time following a promotional trip to Australia for Heidi Klum Intimates. Her outfit centered on distressed Amo jeans, a black Saint Laurent leather jacket, a gray scarf, and black Versace Medusa high-tops.

The Versace sneakers provided the clearest contrast with her 2014 airport look. Instead of concealing much of the footwear beneath flared jeans, Klum wore distressed, cropped Amo jeans that left the high-top silhouette and thick white soles fully visible.

The black leather uppers coordinated with her Saint Laurent biker jacket, while the contrasting white soles separated the sneakers visually from the otherwise dark upper half of the outfit. Klum has also worn statement sneakers in other off-duty looks, including embellished Dolce & Gabbana Portofino sneakers featured in our look at Heidi Klum’s contrasting sneaker-and-pump styles.

Versace Medusa: The Detail Behind Heidi Klum’s High-Top Sneakers

Versace’s Medusa emblem has appeared across the house’s clothing, accessories, and footwear in numerous forms. On Klum’s high-top sneakers, the motif was rendered tonally against the black upper rather than used as a contrasting gold accent, keeping the branding relatively subdued.

Klum has worn much more conspicuous Versace footwear on the red carpet. At the 2014 American Music Awards, for example, she completed a head-to-toe Versace look with crystal-embellished Versace sandals with colorful straps and transparent Lucite heels. The two pairs show very different ways the house applies its bold footwear aesthetic.

Other Versace shoes demonstrate how differently the house has incorporated the Medusa motif, from towering platforms to strappy sandals and slingback pumps.

3. April 2016: Burnt-Orange Flatform Wedges With Cropped Printed Pants

Less than three months later, Klum returned to LAX on April 25, 2016, in another footwear-focused travel look. This time, burnt-orange leather flatform wedges provided the strongest color in an outfit built around a black button-down blouse and cropped printed trousers.

The shoes combined an open-toe mule upper with a substantial platform wedge. Unlike the brown platforms she wore beneath long flared jeans in 2014, the cropped length of her printed trousers left the orange shoes completely exposed.

The continuous wedge also distinguishes this pair from platforms with a separate heel; our guide to platform-shoe styles and their history looks at how the construction appears across wedges, sandals, pumps, boots, and other silhouettes.

Klum accessorized with a fringed Saint Laurent straw-and-leather bag and traveled with Louis Vuitton luggage. The mix of black, patterned trousers, natural straw, fringe, and orange footwear made this the most eclectic of the three airport outfits.

Heidi Klum’s Saint Laurent Platforms: From Candy Sandals to Janis Pumps

The substantial soles in these airport looks were not isolated experiments. In July 2016, Klum paired cropped Amo denim with bow-front Saint Laurent “Candy” platform sandals, keeping the shoes fully visible below the shorter jeans.

Saint Laurent had already been a recurring footwear label in her wardrobe. Klum wore the house’s “Janis” T-strap platform pumps on consecutive America’s Got Talent red carpets in 2013, demonstrating how the same high platform could work with both a leopard-print Versace dress and a blue sequin mini.

How Heidi Klum Styles Platforms, Sneakers, and Wedges for Travel

Across these three LAX appearances, Klum used footwear in noticeably different ways. Her 2014 brown platforms extended the line of long flared jeans, her black Versace high-tops gave distressed denim a sportier finish in February 2016, and her orange wedges became the most visible element of her cropped-trouser look that April.

The progression also shows why trouser length matters when styling statement shoes. The 2014 platforms are largely concealed by denim, whereas the cropped hems in both 2016 outfits expose the shape of the footwear. For Klum, who was already experimenting with substantial Saint Laurent platforms away from the airport, the raised sole was clearly not limited to formal dressing.

Where to Find Archival Versace Medusa Sneakers

Klum’s exact black Medusa high-tops date to an earlier Versace collection and are best treated as an archival style rather than a shoe shoppers can expect to find in the current collection. Discontinued Versace shoes can surface on the resale market, including among the pre-owned Versace shoes at The RealReal. Availability, sizes, and condition naturally change as individual pairs are listed and sold.
