If it were up to Prada, we’d all be clunking around in thick, heavy wedge shoes come fall and winter — that is, if we can handle them. Even self-proclaimed Prada lover Alexa Chung is having second thoughts about wearing them.

“They looked quite difficult to maneuver,” she told reporters. But as she is always one for trying trends first, Alexa is up for the challenge and gamely said that she “will give it a go. I wouldn’t kick them out of bed.”

The shoes themselves aren’t so intimidating (we’ve definitely featured more treacherous heels before), but they are quite something else.

They are a study in contrast: both retro and futuristic, art deco and modern, and sexy and dowdy at the same time.

Granny-ish square toes are offset by steampunk-inspired screwed-on metal plates at the heels. Slim metallic straps are contrasted with wide, chunky wedges. Leather boots are placed on thick platforms, buffed and slick so that they look like they’d be right at home in ‘The Jetsons.’

The play, in contrast, continued for the rest of the collection, which explored extremes in sheer, diaphanous dresses topped with heavy shearling coats.

The collection, according to Miuccia Prada, is a reflection of her current infatuation with German culture. During her preparations, she spent a month immersing herself in the works of Fassbinder and Kurt Weill.

Though she may not know how this theme is specifically related to clothing, she does hint that it encompasses a dichotomy of sophistication and slight vulgarity.
