Katy Perry: Latest Cover Girl for Melissa Shoes’s Plastic Dream Magazine

WWD reports that Katy Perry, who has forever been hounded by plastic surgery rumors, is now “truly embracing plastic”! The 26-year-old singer is the latest cover girl for the fourth issue of Plastic Dreams, a magazine produced by the footwear brand Melissa.

Melissa couldn’t have picked a better model for their shoes. Not only has Katy Perry been spotted wearing Melissa shoes before, but her quirky fashion sense and charming public persona perfectly matches Melissa’s bright, shiny and colorful plastic shoe styles. They also couldn’t have done a better job on the vibrant jungle treatment on the photos. Now if only they got Katy Perry to wear one of her fun latex dresses, this whole spread would’ve been a real plastic dream!

I positively swooned over these pink sandals Rachel Bilson was seen wearing to catch a movie last Friday night. It’s about time we saw fun, colorful sandals worn in the summer!

I love playful footwear like these. They really make any boring outfit look fun, don’t they? Rachel Bilson’s plain grey sweater + black jacket + skinny jeans oufit would look so ordinary if she wore it with any ol’ pair of shoes, but suddenly looks young, fresh and even charming with those bright pink sandals with a burst of huge flower blossoms.

UGG Makes Shoes that are NOT Sheepskin Boots

UGG Australia has actually been making these shoes for a while now, but I guess I was in denial and refused to acknowledge that there really are UGG shoes that are not sheepskin boots.

I mean, these I can understand why UGG added them to their merchandise mix. They’re slippers, moccasins, slip-ons and even flip flops, but they’re warm and cozy (the patented UGG feeling) and are all lined with fur or have sheepskin insoles:

I don’t understand why some of these shoes cost nearly as much as UGG’s sheepskin boots, but these are kinda nice.

The jungle green (more like turquoise actually) wedges are really cute, the customer reviews for the flip flops say they’re top quality, and is that leopard print I see, UGG? I’m still trying to get used to your summer shoes here, so please slow down on trying to become trendy.

I guess it’s about time that UGG made summer shoes anyway. If UGG boots really were made by a surfer, then these UGG flip flops, sneakers and sandals were just ’round the corner.

9 Bamboo Shoes for Beating the Heat this Summer

Bamboo straw mat flip flops

I remember that for one summer of my life – and I’m betting many of you did too – I endlessly wore a pair of bamboo flip flops. They looked very much like the flip flops in picture above. The straps and the sides were made of black felt and the insoles were made of a light colored bamboo straw mat. I wore them everywhere that one hot summer season, and wore them with everything from tank tops, jeans, and the requisite floral summer skirts. I kept them on until the black felt started to look grey, the sides started to peel off, and the straw mat began to look dirty. And like how flip flops usually go, I finally had to give up wearing those beloved bamboo flip flops when the straps on them broke.

With summer looming ahead, I am reminded of my bamboo flip flops once again. I bought mine off of a sidewalk street vendor back then; I doubt they’re that easy to find now. I searched online and although I did find a seller of my old bamboo flip flops (from which I got the picture from), I stumbled upon something much nicer: wedges, gladiator sandals, sneakers, high heels, and other sorts of shoes all made out of bamboo.

It’s my old summer favorite applied to different shoe styles. It’s like a dream come true! Some shoes simply have the bamboo design but on other shoes… well, you have got to wait and see what they do with bamboo on shoes now.

Let’s start with 3 shoes that adapted the bamboo design to give them a more summery look:

These already summery OluKai Hali’a Ws sandals have bamboo-like treads on the bottom. $94.00.

Another pair of sandals with the bamboo treads. These Sofft Faye sandals have a stacked heel made of leawood with a bamboo-printed polyurethane outsole. $89.96.

I love the textured bamboo platform soles on these Dezario Cluster wedges. I don’t think they’re made of real bamboo though – they’re just “bamboo-shaped”. $138.95.

These next 3 bamboo shoes use actual bamboo in their designs:

The heels on these gladiator sandals are made of bamboo while the rest of the soles are made of recycled cork. These Naya Salidas are $114.00.

Because of the Tech-Dry linings made out of a recycled polyester and charred bamboo blend on these Ahnu Tilden II sandals, you can get these wet without having to worry about excessive moisture, bacteria buildup, or bad odor. Just the sandals to wear for a hiking trip. $94.00.

These The North Face Women’s Mountain Sneakers make use of bamboo in every part of its design. The uppers are a combination of a metal-free suede and spun bamboo textile. The foam sockliners are partly made of bamboo plant cellulose fiber. The Cork EVA midsoles also have the plant cellulose fiber which provide heel cushioning for these sneakers. These make the most use out of bamboo without even looking like the typical bamboo shoes. $88.95.

Sanuk’s Tube Flops can Actually Be Cool

I’m going to be completely open-minded about this because although Sanuk’s Tube Flop looks like it’s asking to be scrutinized, it is undeniably a unique product. Sanuk was the first company to market their loafer-style shoes as NOT shoes BUT sandals, and that bit of creative genius from Sanuk was a huge business and marketing success.

So what about their latest invention, the Tube Flop? It didn’t receive as warm a welcome as their first product, that’s for sure. Maybe it has to do with the general consensus that sandals with socks is a total fashion faux pas, maybe wearing them makes you look confused about whether you’re really feeling hot or cold, or maybe because it looks like this:

I mean, was this old curtain design one of the top choices for sock prints, really?

They also come in plain black, stripes, and in the fun, bright colors above, but did they really have to use mesh fabric for the socks? (Look closer at the picture).

It seems making the sandal + sock combination look cool wasn’t enough of a challenge for Sanuk so they decided to add other fashion crimes into the mix to make it more um, interesting.

Even though these tube flops seem like they won’t catch on with the public as well as the Sanuk Sidewalk Surfers did, we’ve got to hand it to Sanuk for thinking out of the box. They’ve already gotten people talking about it (although they’re talking more about how bad it looks than anything else), they already have the video ad campaign filled with hot chicks, so all they really need to do is add a few tweaks here and there to make the product more appealing.

The first thing they could do is get rid of the gold chevron print and get more cool prints. They did it for the Sidewalk Surfers, so why not for the tube flops? They could also try detaching the sock from the flip flop because (1) it would make cleaning them easier and (2) I don’t even know why they thought of permanently attaching the socks.

Thirdly, if Sanuk’s going for fun and funk, then perhaps they can take it a step further and go in the direction of totally funky Japanese-slash-ballerina fashion. They could make the socks really baggy, out of cable knit material, or in pretty pastel colors:

They could also get rid of the ugly, shiny plastic flipflop and use better-looking rubber flipflops.

Oh and even though Sanuk founder Jeff Kelley said in a Transworld Business interview that he didn’t want the tube flop to become a “teeny bopper, 12-year-old item”, I have to disagree with him and say that tube flops should come in kids sizes. If there’s anyone who would look cute in tube flops, it would be kids.
