It was yet another star-studded front row at the Chanel Fall/Winter 2013 fashion show, which took place this Tuesday at the Grand Palais in Paris, France.

Diane Kruger, one of Karl Lagerfeld’s favorite muses, attended the event in this pannier-skirted denim dress, the first look from the Chanel Resort 2013 collection.

The beret and studded pointed flats that Diane Kruger chose to accessorize with might be criticized as unimaginative. Still, her dress and the rest of the Chanel 2013 collection were explicitly designed with the 18th-century Court of Versailles in mind. So, her literal interpretation is the best way to honor the Kaiser’s design. Or it could also be Diane Kruger’s way of taming it down a little.
As much as we love denim, the fabric and the too-light wash sadly cheapen the design in this case. Karl Lagerfeld was going for a hip-hop and Marie Antoinette fusion for this collection, but it didn’t mix well. The clueless styling with platform creepers — something Prada has already done so well that it’d be challenging to top — didn’t help either.
A collection like this would be understandable coming from a fashion student but not someone as famous and established as Karl Lagerfeld. I can’t bring myself to like these denim pieces, but what about you? Do you think the Chanel 2013 Resort collection is a hit or a flop?
By the way, Olivier Theyskens could execute haute couture denim dresses flawlessly.
