When Dakota Johnson arrived at the New York City premiere of Daddio on June 10, 2024, she solidified her status as a primary muse for the “lingerie-as-outerwear” movement.

Attending the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival as both the film’s lead and co-producer, Johnson’s appearance offered a definitive look at her mid-2020s style evolution.

In the film, Johnson stars opposite Sean Penn as a passenger who engages in a life-altering conversation with a taxi driver following a flight into JFK. While the film’s setting is gritty and contained, her red carpet wardrobe for the project was anything but.

Dakota Johnson Channels the Sheer Lingerie Trend in a Navy Gucci Bustier Dress

Dakota Johnson’s red carpet history is defined by her affinity for transparency and delicate textiles. At this Tribeca event, she leaned into the era’s “sheer dressing” phenomenon, elevating a bold, boudoir-inspired aesthetic into a high-fashion statement.

I love the concept of sheer dressing done well at the right time and place. However, Dakota’s ensemble for this event missed the mark. It felt a touch underdressed, yet tried too hard to be trendy. It fell short of the typical charm and elegance I had come to expect from her red-carpet looks.

For the occasion, the American actress wore a translucent Gucci dress in dark navy blue. The piece was from the Italian luxury fashion house’s Fall 2024 ready-to-wear collection, which debuted on the runway during Milan Fashion Week last February.

Designed by Gucci’s creative director, Sabato De Sarno, the dress was part of his second women’s collection, prominently featuring vibrant colors, tailored pieces, and lingerie-inspired designs.

The slip-style midi dress showcased a cut-out bustier with intricate, lingerie-inspired lace detailing across the bust.

This design included a see-through panel on the bodice, offering a glimpse of her midriff. Her attire featured delicate spaghetti straps, adding to its elegant yet daring appeal.

The slinky ensemble transitioned from the bustier into a flowing skirt of a see-through blue crepe de chine. The skirt had a romantic length, just grazing her ankles, and featured a daring thigh-high slit at the back that peeked at her derrière.

Underneath the flowy outfit, Dakota sported a matching pair of lacy briefs. This is where I find some appreciation for her look.

Unlike many sheer red-carpet dresses that expose plain thongs, the Ben and Kate star’s undergarments were made from the same lace fabric as the dress itself. It gave a touch of thoughtful coordination.

Dakota Johnson Adds Bohemian Edge With Black Gucci Sandals and Vintage Tiffany Jewelry

Known for adding her unique touch, Dakota Johnson consistently does well taking the runway look and making it her own, and this recent festival appearance was no exception.

Sabato De Sarno’s original vision for the dress featured bold lime green pumps, a black choker, and a matching blue bag. However, the 21 Jump Street actress offered a simpler, Bohemian chic interpretation, which I find refreshing.

Dakota, collaborating with her longtime stylist Kate Young, whose A-list clientele includes Julianne Moore, Nina Dobrev, and Michelle Williams, topped off her look with sleek, chic black Gucci sandals. This choice is a clever way to showcase the collection of small tattoos on her foot.

The sandals, crafted from black patent leather, featured open toes with two horizontal straps across the toes and thin straps crisscrossing around the front of the ankles. The high stiletto heels gave her a few extra inches, enhancing her elegant posture.

However, the real focal point of Dakota Johnson’s ensemble was her striking black feather necklace from Tiffany & Co. The vintage Elsa Peretti design—often referred to as the iconic “Bean”—featured a rich green jade stone set within handwoven silk, accented with a gold rondelle and finished with a long tassel that fell nearly to her navel.

Paired with the sheer Gucci dress, the piece introduced a subtle bohemian spirit to the look, echoing the relaxed, boho-luxe aesthetic that defined much of early-2010s red-carpet style.

The Madame Web actress further accentuated the color scheme with a sculptural Tiffany & Co. Elsa Peretti ring crafted from 18-carat gold and adorned with a sizable Nephrite stone. This subtle detail tied the whole look together.

Dakota Johnson Completes the Look With Soft Peach Makeup and Signature Fringe

Thankfully, Dakota Johnson, who is busy filming Materialists, kept her signature beauty look for this event, ensuring the overall vibe remained firmly rooted in the 2020s.

Makeup artist Georgie Eisdell went for a natural look, highlighting her gorgeous blue eyes. Her makeup featured sultry peach tones with a smoky effect, black mascara, a hint of plum blush, and a soft, matching rose-colored lip.

Mark Townsend styled her hair. He kept things simple, letting her naturally long brown locks cascade down her chest with a slight wave. The signature front bangs framed her face perfectly, and a matching nude manicure and pedicure completed the picture of effortless elegance.
