Sarah Hyland worked the press line at the star-studded 2019 Vanity Fair Oscar Party at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday in Beverly Hills, California.
Two days after looking stunning in a pink Zac Posen gown at the party, Sarah shared on Instagram that she wore two pairs of Spanx to hide the bulge left behind from a kidney transplant.

“#funfact I’m wearing TWO pairs of spanx,” she captioned the post, which showcased her look from multiple angles. “Why diet? When you can just hide it!”
A popular Hollywood fashion secret, The “Dirty Dancing” star wore Spanx to hide the bulge left behind from her second kidney transplant, which she had in 2017.
In an interview with SELF, the 28-year-old American actress explained why the bulge is there: “When they do a kidney transplant, they connect the new kidney to your old kidneys in front,” Sarah said, which makes her lower abdomen pop out a bit. “I call it my KUPA: kidney upper pussy area.”

The “Modern Family” actress received backlash on social media after revealing her fashion secret.
“Your comment is toxic body shaming. Spanx are unhealthy and so is dieting when you weigh 90 pounds,” one user commented. Another user simply noted, “Not a great caption.”
“Yeh I don’t need to see this when I already feel (expletive) about my body,” yet another commenter wrote on Instagram. “So thanks for that.”
Sarah Hyland revealed in December that she underwent a second kidney transplant for her kidney dysplasia, a condition in which the internal structures of one or both of a fetus’ kidneys do not develop normally while in the womb.
She initially received one of her father’s kidneys in 2012 but it failed. The treatment following the failed surgery caused her to drop weight, and also attracted criticism on social media. Other celebrities with kidney dysplasia include Selena Gomez and Halle Berry.

Doctors removed the kidney in May 2017. In November the same year, they implanted one from her younger brother Ian Donovan Hyland, which led to conflicted feelings.
“I was very depressed,” she said. “When a family member gives you a second chance at life, and it fails, it almost feels like it’s your fault. It’s not. But it does. For a long time, I was contemplating suicide, because I didn’t want to fail my little brother like I failed my dad.”
Being a Hollywood celebrity isn’t always as easy as it seems.
