Katie Holmes joined Zoe Saldaña, Winnie Harlow, and Zosia Mamet in opening the new Nordstrom flagship store in New York City on Tuesday evening.
While the other celebrity attendees bundled up in coats, Katie decided to keep it much more simple. She donned a Saint Laurent Fall 2019 black-satin dress ($2,800 at Neiman Marcus) that features padded shoulders, a slanted hemline, and a pleat-gathered waist.

Katie kept her all-black look from being boring with a youthful tousled hairdo, vibrant red lipstick, and a fun and sexy pair of Saint Laurent sheer dotted stockings ($210 at Farfetch.)
The 40-year-old actress rounded out her monochromatic ensemble with classic, can’t-go-wrong black suede pumps. You can buy her black suede “Carolyne” heels from Giuseppe Zanotti at Farfetch.

We adore how the black side buttons on Katie’s dress sort of mimic the square dots on her sheer stockings.
What we’re not loving is that gold-clasped flat clutch that looks like it won’t fit anything more than a phone.

In contrast to Katie’s simple look was Maria Sharapova‘s complicated Sacai Fall 2019 dress overladen with cargo chest pockets, sheer sleeves, drawstrings, pleats, and color-blocking.

We get that the army-green panels are supposed to contrast with the fluidity of the rest of the dress. However, they only ended up making statuesque 6’2″ Maria look boxy and wide around her midsection.

At least Maria stayed true to her sports roots.
The Russian tennis player donned the latest iteration of her own Nike LA Cortez x Maria Sharapova sneakers for the occasion.
