At the 2022 Met Gala in New York City, Jared Leto and Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele arrived in coordinated Gucci eveningwear that quickly became one of the night’s most talked-about fashion moments.

Long before his coordinated appearance with Alessandro Michele, Leto had already established a reputation for theatrical Met Gala dressing. At the 2019 event, he famously carried a wax replica of his own head as a Gucci accessory.

The pair embraced a deliberately mirrored look, wearing matching embroidered tuxedos styled with red satin bow ties, black leather gloves, Gucci clutches, and coordinating black suede loafers.

Their appearance continued a tradition of theatrical Met Gala dressing while also offering a closer look at Gucci’s distinctive approach to formal footwear and accessories.

The black suede loafers provided a deliberate counterpoint to the embroidered ivory tuxedos, balancing the ornate detailing, satin lapels, and theatrical accessories with a more restrained approach to evening dressing.

Rendered in soft suede with elongated pointed toes and a clean, hardware-minimal finish, the slip-on shoes reflected Gucci’s preference for refined formal footwear during Alessandro Michele’s tenure.

Although the exact Met Gala loafers were never publicly identified and were likely bespoke or runway-derived, their elongated silhouette recalls Michele-era interpretations of classic Gucci footwear, reworking traditional slippers and Horsebit-inspired designs in suede, velvet, and embroidered finishes. Their understated appearance grounded the ornate tailoring without competing with it.

Gucci’s current collection still reflects many of these design cues. Styles available at Farfetch as of June 2026 include the Horsebit-detail loafers ($1,090), Jordaan loafers ($1,090), Horsebit 1953 loafers ($1,221), suede loafers ($1,030–$1,090), GG-patterned loafers ($1,060), and New Jordaan loafers ($622, reduced from $830).

The coordinated Gucci looks also contributed to one of the evening’s more unexpected talking points. Before Jared Leto arrived, many viewers believed he had already walked the carpet after spotting Swedish creative Fredrik Robertsson in Iris van Herpen’s sculptural Quantum ensemble.

With long hair, facial hair, and dramatic eye makeup, Robertsson was briefly mistaken for the actor until the real Leto appeared later that evening.

Speaking to Vogue, Robertsson reflected on the mix-up: “I have heard before that I look like Jared Leto. My favorite part of the night was when I bumped into him, who the press thought I was, and we just laughed at it all. He said he was honored they thought he was me!”

How Gucci Loafers and Met Gala Dressing Keep Redefining Formal Footwear

Jared Leto and Alessandro Michele’s coordinated Met Gala appearance showed how Gucci can turn classic evening pieces—embroidered tuxedos, satin bow ties, leather gloves, and suede loafers—into a fully realized fashion statement.

Their matching look also fits into a wider history of Gucci footwear moments, from red-carpet platforms to everyday Horsebit loafers that continue to shape celebrity style.
