From Film Flop to Streaming Success: Percy Jackson Finds New Life on Disney+

Although originally positioned to rival the Harry Potter franchise, the Percy Jackson film series ended after just two movies, despite the book series spanning five titles.

Now reimagined as a Disney+ series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians debuted on December 19, 2023, with an eight-episode first season adapting The Lightning Thief. The show was renewed in February 2024 for a second season based on The Sea of Monsters (set for release in December 2025), with a third season adapting The Titan’s Curse confirmed in March 2025.

Author Rick Riordan—who once likened the original scripts to his “life’s work going through a meat grinder”—is now closely involved in ensuring the adaptation stays true to the books.

Supporting New Cast and Legacy of the Original Films

Although Daddario isn’t involved in the newest version of the beloved series, she expressed how grateful she is for the movies on WrapWomen’s Unwrapped podcast.

“I loved Percy Jackson. Like, I loved it. When I stepped into Percy Jackson and got that job, I had no idea what it was. I was like, a bit part actor in New York City, you know? I was a kid, I was working at a bar, I didn’t have any idea of Hollywood or of all this stuff. And so when I got that job, I didn’t know what I was stepping into. I knew it was a really big movie. And it was the most amazing experience for a 22/23-year-old to have.”

Alexandra Daddario Reflects on Her Role and Supports the New Generation of Demigods

When filming, Alexandra Daddario was six years older than her character Annabeth Chase, while Logan Lerman was just one year older than Percy Jackson. Brandon T. Jackson, who played Grover, was 25.

Although the film series underperformed at the box office, it developed a loyal fanbase that continues to celebrate the original cast. Daddario has confirmed she won’t appear in the Disney+ reboot but expressed support for the next generation of stars.

“I’m so excited for the kids that are going to be cast in that and how they’ll inspire a new generation of young women,” she said. “Annabeth is such an inspiring character to so many people. But no, I don’t know anything about it beyond that—and I shouldn’t! I was just the girl in the movie.”
