Long before she became a global icon, Billie Eilish spent her formative years in Pasadena, California, finding her voice within the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus.

While the group is secular, its rehearsals at the Pasadena Presbyterian Church and a repertoire of traditional spirituals provided Eilish with an early, unexpected immersion into religious culture.

This proximity to faith sparked a private, intense period of devotion for the young singer—a phase that unfolded independently of her non-religious upbringing.

On her Me & Dad Radio podcast, Eilish later reflected on how that childhood curiosity evolved into a more observational, personal relationship with spirituality—less about doctrine, more about perspective.

That same sense of introspection—of shaping identity on her own terms—would come to define not just her music, but her visual language as well.

By the time she arrived at the 2020 Grammys, where she made history at just 18 by sweeping all four major categories, Eilish translated that inner world into something boldly external: a head-to-toe Gucci look that rejected traditional red-carpet glamour in favor of oversized silhouettes, monogrammed details, and a kind of uniform-like self-expression that felt almost ritualistic in its precision.

In addition, Billie became the youngest recipient of Album of the Year. The record was previously held by Taylor Swift, who won the coveted award for her album Fearless in 2010 when she was 20.

Billie also won Best Pop Vocal Album, taking home five Grammys out of her six nominations.

However, during her acceptance speech for Album of the Year, Billie told the crowd that Ariana Grande should’ve won the award. “Can I just say I think Ariana deserves this. Thank U, Next… I think it deserves more than anything in the world. I love you so much.”

The American artist wore a neon green diamante-detailed turtleneck sweater underneath her pajama-style outfit.

Billie’s beauty look was hardly visible through her face mask and sunglasses. Makeup artist Robert Rumsey highlighted her features with brushed-up brows, mascara, shimmery eyeshadow, matte bronzer, and a swipe of rosy lip gloss.

Her nails were painted green with a Gucci monogram to match her ensemble. It reportedly took manicurist Emi Kudo four hours to achieve this look!

Stylist Samantha Burkhart completed Billie’s head-to-toe Gucci moment with gold logo hoop earrings and the now-iconic ‘Flashtrek’ sneakers—Gucci’s maximalist, hiking-inspired design defined by its oversized lug sole, layered technical construction, and crystal-embellished straps, a once-polarizing silhouette that Eilish helped cement as a red-carpet statement at the 2020 Grammys.

Billie was joined by her brother, Finneas Baird O’Connell, on the red carpet. Like his sister, he also wore Gucci.

The songwriter/musician looked handsome in a black, floral-embroidered coat, a white shirt underneath, a bow tie, black trousers, and leather shoes.

Aside from earning awards for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year with his sister, Finneas also took home Best Engineered Album and Producer of the Year, Non-Classical. The siblings performed “When the Party’s Over” at the ceremony.

From Red Carpet Disruption to Archive Icon: Why Gucci Flashtrek Still Matters

What began as a polarizing, hiking-inspired sneaker quickly evolved into one of Gucci’s most defining silhouettes of the late 2010s—thanks in no small part to Billie Eilish’s fearless approach to dressing.

By pairing the Flashtrek’s exaggerated lug sole, layered materials, and crystal embellishments with oversized tailoring, she reframed the idea of red-carpet footwear, proving that comfort, attitude, and high fashion could exist in the same step.

Today, the Flashtrek lives on as a collectible “archive” piece—less about trend, more about a moment when maximalism, streetwear, and luxury collided in a way that still feels unmistakably bold.

While her 2020 Grammys look cemented chunky sneakers as part of her red carpet identity, Billie Eilish continued to return to the silhouette in the years that followed—refining, but never fully abandoning, the oversized, street-driven aesthetic that defined her early style.

By the 2024 People’s Choice Awards, she leaned into that same attitude with a fresh edge, pairing her relaxed, layered look with chunky FTP x Osiris D3 sneakers—a reminder that even as her fashion evolves, her connection to bold, grounded footwear remains intact.
