On January 9, 2018, at the ArcLight Hollywood premiere of The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, the 5-foot-1 (154.9 cm) Billie Lourd—who wears a U.S. shoe size 6.5—delivered a red-carpet look that showed how vintage inspiration works best on a petite frame when it’s grounded with modern restraint, starting from the shoes up.

Rather than leaning into costume nostalgia, Lourd approached 1920s glamour with intention, pairing a feather-trimmed custom Adam Selman dress with clean, minimalist footwear.

The result felt referential without being theatrical, echoing Old Hollywood elegance while remaining firmly contemporary.

That balance was anchored by her choice of Manolo Blahnik “Chaos” sandals—sleek white leather heels whose simplicity offset the drama above the ankle. It was a reminder that when a look pulls from the past, timeless shoes are often what make it feel relevant, wearable, and enduring.

Billie gave us a little bit of the ’20s and a bit of Marilyn Monroe in a custom-designed Adam Selman dress. The dress was the same off-white as Marilyn’s iconic dress, and featured feathers to create an off-the-shoulder neckline before tapering into an open slit skirt.

The designer brought the look up to 2018’s standards by snipping the hem just above the ankles—simple, but genius.

Billie completed her look with Neil Lane jewelry and a pair of Manolo Blahnik “Chaos” sandals in white leather.

That choice mattered. The Manolo Blahnik “Chaos” sandal is widely regarded as the brand’s ultimate minimalist heel—a permanent fixture in the collection and a red-carpet staple precisely because it never competes with the clothes.

Defined by its barely-there straps, clean proportions, and impeccably balanced pitch, the design elongates the leg while disappearing visually, allowing texture, silhouette, and movement to take center stage. In white leather, it provided the perfect counterpoint to the feathered gown above—proof that when a look leans into history, restraint at ground level is what keeps it timeless.

“Chaos” fan Billie Lourd may have hit the nail on the head with her elegant look. However, this didn’t stop her from entertaining the paparazzi with hilarious facial expressions.

The actress reunited with “Scream Queens” castmate Lea Michele.

Why the Manolo Blahnik “Chaos” Remains a Red-Carpet Constant

Billie Lourd’s look underscored a truth that holds across decades: when an outfit carries historical reference or textural drama, it’s the footwear that determines whether it feels timeless or dated.

Few designs illustrate that balance as consistently as the Manolo Blahnik “Chaos”—a sandal that has quietly anchored countless modern fashion moments without ever demanding attention.
