Few garments bridge the gap between casual comfort and professional polish as effectively as the wrap dress. While it has become a permanent fixture in modern closets, its status as a design icon was cemented during the “Journey of a Dress” retrospective in Los Angeles.
This exhibition chronicled the silhouette’s evolution from a 1970s jersey experiment into a global uniform for women who value both form and function.
The appeal lies in its simplicity: a silhouette that adjusts to the wearer rather than forcing the wearer to adjust to the fabric. Because the dress offers such a clean, rhythmic line from the waist to the hem, it serves as a neutral canvas for footwear. Whether paired with a structured pump for the office or a minimalist sandal for the weekend, the dress relies on the shoe to set the outfit’s final tone.

Diane von Furstenberg was only 26 when she came up with the wrap dress. It instantly resonated with working women who sought independence and a wardrobe that didn’t require the fuss of buttons or zippers.

The fabulous wrap dress celebrated its 40th anniversary with an exhibit showcasing its journey. Several celebrities joined the celebration, even wearing DvF wrap dresses from different collections.

“You can’t beat a Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dress; I always tend to go for the wrap dresses with a little more structure. I also love Prada shoes,” actress Wendi McLendon-Covey noted, highlighting how the right footwear completes the DVF aesthetic.

DVF wrap dresses might be a little pricier than your typical simple frocks. But because of their timelessness, we consider these frocks a no-fail fashion investment. They can easily go from day to night and, on top of that, are unbelievably comfy, too.

Diane created the wrap dress when she sought independence and work, initially designing it as a practical and stylish option without buttons or zippers. The first version featured an animal print, enhancing its appeal by making women feel confident and feline-like.

“The wrap dress is the most traditional form of dressing: It’s like a robe, it’s like a kimono, it’s like a toga,” she told HuffPost in an interview.
“It doesn’t have buttons or zippers. What made it different was that it was jersey; therefore, it was close to the body and it was a print. And the first one was animal print so it made every woman look like a feline. And that’s how it happened. It’s not like I was thinking ‘Oh, I’m creating the IT dress.’ I just made it and it took off and was a huge success.”
Why the Right Shoes Define Every Wrap Dress Look
As enduring as the wrap dress may be, its real strength lies in how effortlessly it adapts to the moment—and that transformation almost always comes down to the shoes.

A sharp stiletto can turn its soft drape into power dressing, while barely-there sandals keep the silhouette fluid and understated. Whether styled for the office, a red carpet, or something in between, the wrap dress is never finished until the footwear sets its final tone.
