In May 2020, Hailey Bieber was spotted in Beverly Hills, California, wearing a pair of Air Jordan 1 Retro High “Union Los Angeles Blue Toe” sneakers.

The look paired the high-top sneakers with black high-waisted skinny pants from the Australian label Steele.

She completed the outfit with a black BY FAR Amber leather shoulder bag—a silhouette that remains a staple of early-2020s minimalism —retailing for $585.

The Union Los Angeles x Air Jordan 1 Retro High “Blue Toe” sneakers Hailey Bieber wore were far more than another celebrity sneaker flex.

Released on November 17, 2018, the collaboration is widely considered one of the defining sneaker projects of the last decade, helping shift the industry toward reconstructed, vintage-inspired design. Retailing for $190 at launch, the shoes sold out almost instantly and have since become a modern grail within sneaker culture.

Designed by Union Los Angeles founder Chris Gibbs, the sneaker was built around the idea of a “Frankenstein” repair job — as though two worn pairs of original 1985 Air Jordan 1s had been stitched together at a swap meet. The lower half borrowed the classic “Storm Blue” colorway, while the ankle collar came from the iconic black-and-red “Bred” version. Thick yellow zig-zag stitching intentionally exposed the seam connecting the mismatched panels, giving the shoe its now-signature reconstructed look.

Collectors still obsess over the details: premium tumbled leather, cream-toned vintage midsoles, the hidden yellow “UN/LA” tag tucked beneath the Wings logo, and gradient black-to-cream laces that mirror the split-color design.

Long before “unfinished” sneakers became a runway trend, Union Los Angeles helped popularize the deconstructed aesthetic that would later influence collaborations between luxury fashion and streetwear.

By the time Hailey Bieber stepped out in the pair in Beverly Hills in May 2020, the sneakers had already achieved near-mythic status among collectors. Rather than simply wearing a trendy blue high-top, she was wearing a piece of sneaker history that signaled genuine fluency in streetwear culture.

Their resale value continues to reflect that legacy. While pricing fluctuates by size and condition, recent StockX sales have ranged from around $600 to as high as $2,000, with several 2026 sales comfortably clearing the four-figure mark.
