In 2009, Malin Åkerman starred as Silk Spectre II in the superhero film Watchmen, an adaptation of Alan Moore’s graphic novel that you can buy on Amazon.

Malin Akerman was 29 years old when principal photography for Watchmen began in September 2007 and was 30 years old when the film was released on February 23, 2009. Malin Akerman celebrated her 31st birthday on May 12, 2009.

Embracing Nudity in Film

In an interview, Malin Akerman stated that she had no issue with nudity in her role as Silk Spectre II in Watchmen, as she grew up understanding that nudity is not something to be ashamed of, unlike many other actresses.

“In Sweden, nudity is natural. It’s not considered sexual. We’ve grown up with boobies on television. People are topless on the beach. My parents would sometimes walk naked from the bedroom to the bathroom,” she told The Orange County Register in 2009.

“You don’t blink because it’s so natural. I always think of my parents when I take a role. If I had been brought up in a prudish household, perhaps I would think differently. But, if the role is a good one, the nudity is not even an afterthought.”

“I won’t do a role that is gratuitous. If there is no reason for the nudity, I won’t do it,” she added.

The Challenge of Casting in Watchmen

Due to the large number of flashbacks in the story, Zack Snyder cast actors who were younger than their characters in the film Watchmen.

The American film director believed that make-up and special effects artists would have an easier time making actors look older rather than younger.

For example, Carla Gugino, who was 37 years old during filming, played the 67-year-old mother of Malin Akerman, who, in turn, was supposed to be younger than the character of Laura Mennell. Carla Gugino is only seven years older than her on-screen daughter.

However, Jeffrey Dean Morgan was not considered to be able to play a 16-year-old, so it was decided to change the birth year of Edward Morgan “Eddie” Blake, also known as Comedian, from 1924 to 1918.

Jackie Earle Haley, who was 47 years old, played Rorschach, who was 45 years old in the book. While the Rorschach newscast in the film gives his age as 35, it is actually an error, as all other chronology in the film indicates that Rorschach is 45, not 35.

The Silk Spectre Costume

In the interview, Malin Åkerman described wearing her Silk Spectre costume in “Watchmen” as a challenging experience, likening it to “pulling an elastic band over your whole body.”

She humorously noted the addition of a corset and high heel shoes as part of getting ready to fight in the costume, which she acknowledged looked “phenomenal and fierce.”

“It’s literally like pulling an elastic band over your whole body,” she told Access about her costume as Silk Spectre in Watchmen.

“Throw a corset on top of that and some high heel shoes and you’re ready to fight, right?” Malin laughed.

“I mean, it definitely looks phenomenal and fierce, but it’s not… That love scene was really interesting, because he couldn’t actually touch me. Because you had all these LED lights that are scratchy, they’d scrape you.”

A Pop of Color with Shoes

Shoes are always a great place to add a pop of color to what could otherwise be a drab ensemble. Just ask Watchmen actress Malin Akerman.

Malin’s suede-on-suede slingback Louboutin sandals feature multiple shades of pink mixed with doses of black and brown, plus peek-a-boo cutouts on the vamp.

The heel is 4.75 inches high, and the platform is half an inch tall.
