At the 2013 Film Independent Film Awards, we saw Mary Elizabeth Winstead looking summery chic in a blue dress and a pair of wedges. The American actress and singer also looked terrific at ELLE’s 19th Annual Women in Hollywood Celebration and the ‘Smashed’ screening during the 20th Hamptons International Film Festival.
Her first major role came as Jessica Bennett on the NBC soap opera Passions (1999–2000), and her recent films include A Good Day to Die Hard (2013), the fantasy horror film Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012), and the monster film 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016).
A Clever Audition Twist: Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Feet Take Center Stage
Mary Elizabeth Winstead was already a fan of Quentin Tarantino before being considered for a role in “Death Proof.” Upon learning Tarantino was interested in her for the film, Winstead didn’t hesitate to agree to participate, even before reading the script.
Her excitement was fueled by the unique and interesting female characters detailed in the script, a rarity she appreciated. During her audition, which she described as the best experience, Tarantino impressed her with his knowledge of her previous work, making her feel welcomed and valued.
To increase her appeal, Winstead humorously wore flip-flops to the audition, acknowledging the rumors about Tarantino’s interest in feet, a detail she thought might work to her advantage. She talked about her audition in an interview with Hollywood.
But yeah, I went to the audition in flip-flops. Oh, I knew. Yeah, I knew that. I got the notes and everyone was kind of like, “Did you read that, that says he wants you to wear flip-flops?” And I was like, “Oh, yeah, he likes feet. I know that. I’m aware.” So I got a pedicure, and everything, and I kind of did the same thing that Sydney Poitier says she did, where she just kind of flipped off a shoe — threw off her flip-flops and put her feet on the table. I kind of did that as well, even though my feet, my feet aren’t an important part of the film, where a couple of other girls, they are. [Laughs] Their feet are showcased, but mine weren’t. But, just in case, I put them out there.
