At the 2017 Billboard Music Awards at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Rita Ora leaned into the kind of red-carpet styling that defined the late 2010s: sheer fabrics, dramatic couture proportions, and heavily embellished evening sandals.

Walking alongside stars including Halsey, Hailee Steinfeld, and Vanessa Hudgens, she arrived in a Francesco Scognamiglio Spring 2017 Couture look featuring a sheer, embellished skirt and oversized white sleeves.

Rather than competing with the gown’s theatrical proportions, Rita Ora anchored the look with black Giuseppe Zanotti “Dionne” crystal sandals — one of the clearest examples of the late 2010s shift toward “minimalist-maximalist” evening footwear.

Defined by slender crossover straps, fine pavé crystal embellishment, and Zanotti’s sculpted stiletto heel, the Dionne delivered high visual impact with remarkably little material. The delicate “X” ankle straps elongated the leg beneath the sheer lace skirt, while the micro-crystal trim created a diamond-dusted effect that felt polished rather than overtly jeweled.

Produced in Italy with a leather sole and typically set on a towering 120mm heel, the Dionne became a red-carpet staple between 2016 and 2018, worn by stars including Nicole Kidman, Bella Hadid, and Lea Michele as stylists embraced the era’s obsession with barely-there sandals that still carried couture-level glamour.

Lorraine Schwartz and Ofira jewelry completed the styling without pulling attention away from the shoes and couture detailing.
