Thirteen years earlier, she starred opposite Antonio Banderas as his mail-order bride Julia Russell/Bonny Castle in the poorly received 2001 erotic thriller film Original Sin.
It was the first in a series of movies that didn’t resonate well with critics or the general audience.

Filmed in England and Mexico in early 2000, Original Sin was released in the United States on August 3, 2001. Antonio Banderas turned 41 on August 10, 2001, and Angelina Jolie celebrated her 26th birthday on June 4, 2001.

During press interviews and his film commentary, Director Michael Cristofer shared that before the intimate scene between Luis and Julia was shot, Angelina Jolie was adamant about filming it completely nude without any protective coverings.
Inspired by this, Antonio Banderas also approached the scene with full nudity. The scene was filmed with minimal crew present for discretion. Despite this, much of the captured footage was deemed too explicit for general audiences.

For her work in Original Sin and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Angelina Jolie was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress.
“It seems ridiculous to put these two in a romantic melodrama; their faces alone are melodramatic enough. It’s hard to keep a straight face just thinking of Mr. Banderas and Ms. Jolie in the same shot, but ”Original Sin” will bore the giggles right out of you,” The New York Times wrote in its review.

Even the NC-17 unrated edition couldn’t accommodate the entirety of their sex scene, and Banderas and Jolie were rumored to have had unsimulated sex while filming Original Sin.
Jolie discussed the rumors in an interview with ABC News’ Good Morning America in 2001.
“You’re talking about a man who is deeply in love with his wife [actress Melanie Griffith], and married, he has beautiful children with her, and they’re such a great family. And I’m madly in love my husband [actor Billy Bob Thornton], we have such a great relationship, and the idea that either one of us would, would want anything more than our marriages is really insulting and angering,” she said.

“You know, they’d pick up on that, and a lot of the other things they can’t talk about because it’s a thriller and there are secrets, and so you can’t talk about the other things,” Jolie insisted.
“And so the obvious aspect of it is that it’s a very passionate film. I didn’t want to do a sexy movie — that wasn’t what I was out to do. I wanted to do a film about characters, and explore why different things come out in different ways in our life,” she added.

Melanie Griffith’s potential concerns regarding the intimate scenes between her husband, Antonio Banderas, and Angelina Jolie were quickly alleviated when Jolie unexpectedly eloped with Billy Bob Thornton, her second husband, midway through filming.
