Natalie Portman has long mastered the art of the “high-low” style spectrum, oscillating between archival couture and the practicalities of off-duty life.

Whether she is attending a gala in Beverly Hills or arriving for a late-night talk show taping, her footwear choices often serve as the focal point of her look.

In October 2021, Portman attended the “Unforgettable Evening Under the Stars” event in Los Angeles, supporting the L.A. Dance Project.

Vintage Drama: Natalie Portman Sharpens Mugler’s 1981 “Vampire” Dress With Black Ankle-Strap Sandals

For the evening, she leaned into a sharp, architectural aesthetic, wearing a vintage 1981 Mugler ‘Vampire’ dress.

The strapless silhouette provided a timeless backdrop for her choice of footwear: minimalist black ankle-strap sandals that elongated the frame without competing with the dress’s dramatic neckline.

This appearance followed a busy period for the actress, who had recently returned from Australia after filming Thor: Love and Thunder.

While she is often associated with the delicate “balletcore” aesthetic of her Black Swan era, her red-carpet evolution favors clean lines and structurally vintage pieces.

The contrast to her formal gala style was on full display during a 2016 appearance at ABC Studios for Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

Off-Duty Ease: Natalie Portman Pairs White Denim With Custom-Looking Charlotte Olympia Bow Wedges

Arriving for the taping in Los Angeles, Portman opted for a relaxed, utilitarian ensemble that highlighted her preference for comfortable designer staples when away from the cameras.

Portman’s arrival outfit centered on a casual pairing of white denim and a navy long-sleeved top, accessorized with a quilted Dior bag and speckled sunglasses.

However, the standout element was her choice of Charlotte Olympia bow-wedge sandals.

These particular wedges appeared to be a custom iteration of the brand’s signature playful style, featuring an all-black colorway that was never widely released.

Talk-Show Moment: Natalie Portman Compares Paris Politeness With L.A. Friendliness

During the show, Natalie talked about how her five-year-old son has never seen “Star Wars” and will most likely be unable to see “Black Swan” for at least the next couple of years. She also argued that people in Los Angeles are friendlier than Parisians.

“I got here, and I was so surprised when you get in an elevator, and someone starts a conversation … or someone would smile at my child,” Portman said about adjusting to living in Los Angeles.

“There’s a lot of rules of politeness and codes of behavior there that you have to follow,” Portman said about living in the French capital.

“When you go in some place, you have to say ‘Bonjour’ before you say anything else, and then you have to wait two seconds before you say anything else.” Unless you follow this protocol, she says, “They’ll think you’re super rude and then they’ll be rude to you.”
