To prepare for her role as NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, Henson had spent time with the then-98-year-old pioneer, studying the sharp, meticulous mind that helped put a man into orbit.

By the time the film swept the 2017 awards season, Johnson—the last surviving member of the central “Hidden Figures” trio—had finally received her public due, including a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

On this particular Hollywood night, the connection between the actor and the icon was on full display, bridging the gap between 1960s science and modern-day cinema.

Henson has a reputation for commanding a red carpet with ease. For the 2017 Oscars, she joined co-stars Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe in a midnight blue velvet gown by Alberta Ferretti.

The look served as a sartorial nod to the film’s early 1960s era, blending Old Hollywood glamour with a modern, structured silhouette.

As Johnson, then 98 years old, made her way to the podium, the audience rose in a standing ovation, recognizing her immense contributions and impact.

The actress came to support her “Hidden Figures” team, which garnered nominations for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Writing Adapted Screenplay. The film ultimately won no Oscars but was still a critical and commercial success.
