The red carpet was rolled out at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, and Greta Gerwig did not disappoint at the 2023 Gotham Independent Film Awards.
Standing tall at 5ft 8 ½ (174 cm) in a US shoe size 9, the 40-year-old acclaimed writer and director radiated elegance as she arrived in a Brandon Maxwell look that perfectly captured her powerful yet refined style.
That evening, Gerwig—alongside star-producer Margot Robbie—was honored with the prestigious Global Icon & Creator Tribute for their blockbuster Barbie film. This cultural juggernaut reshaped both Hollywood and the fashion conversation in 2023.

Brandon Maxwell Layers and Statement Belt Define Greta Gerwig’s Chic Gotham Look
Her attire featured a white, layered Lyra ruched sheer knit top paired with an ivory-colored Katya sheer knit maxi dress boasting an A-line silhouette, pleats, and a floor-grazing hem.
Adding a touch of sophistication, she adorned an oversized cream Laila wool-silk cape blazer from Brandon Maxwell, featuring peaked lapels and a button-fastening.
The Lady Bird director’s look was cinched with a statement silver Courtney leather belt, showcasing Gerwig’s impeccable style.
Her ensemble was styled by Karla Welch, who perfected every detail—from the sleek black clutch that balanced the dramatic belt to the floor-grazing hem that concealed Gerwig’s choice of heels, adding an air of mystery to her look.

Accessories weren’t overlooked, with Gerwig opting for Ana Khouri jewels, including a diamond Phillipa ear cuff, a diamond Mirian bracelet in white, and a diamond Phillipa ring.
Her blonde locks, styled in a sleek, back-combed fashion, cascaded down her back, while a bold red lip perfectly complemented the nail polish on her fingers.
Gotham Awards’ Special Tribute for Barbie
At the 2023 Gotham Awards, Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie accepted the Global Icon & Creator Tribute with their signature mix of humor and grace. The powerhouse duo thanked the Gotham community while playfully recounting the genesis of Barbie—a project that turned into a cultural phenomenon.
Since its glittering summer release, the film that quite literally “painted the world pink” soared past expectations, earning an astonishing $1.44 billion worldwide. The success cemented its status as the 14th highest-grossing movie of all time and Warner Bros.’s crown jewel of the year. Even more historic? Gerwig became the first female director to helm a billion-dollar film, further solidifying her place in Hollywood’s history books.

Reflecting on the film’s creation during the Covid lockdown, the Frances Ha star shared (via Deadline), “We figured that if no one was making movies anyway, they might as well not make this one. And we showed it to everyone. And Warner Bros., miraculously, said yes, and Mattel, miraculously, said yes.”
Robbie quipped, “Essentially. Mostly. With some notes, which Greta and Noah ignored.” Gerwig countered, “We carefully considered the notes. And then we presented our case,” while Robbie disagreed, saying, “You ignored them.”

After the show, Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie spoke with ET‘s Rachel Smith backstage.
Gerwig expressed, “The Gotham Awards have been part of my experience of being part of the filmmaking community – especially independent films in New York – really from the very beginning. Every time I’ve gotten to attend this event, it’s been inspiring and thrilling to see this group of filmmakers come together and honor their work.”
She added, “Honestly, I just feel very blessed. I never expected I’d get a Gotham Award for Barbie.”
Even though Greta’s heels were hidden beneath her flowing Brandon Maxwell gown at the Gotham Awards, her long-standing love affair with statement footwear is no secret. From sky-high platforms to crystal-embellished sandals, she has consistently paired bold shoes with her red-carpet looks.
