While her heels were hidden beneath the floor-length silhouette, they likely added height to help elongate her petite 5 feet 3 ½ inches (161.3 cm) frame. She completed the look with soft, vintage-inspired Hollywood curls.

Amy Adams’s Acclaimed Arrival Role Showcased Intelligence, Empathy, and Emotional Depth

Amy Adams earned critical acclaim as linguist Dr. Louise Banks in the 2016 science fiction film Arrival, directed by Denis Villeneuve. Based on Ted Chiang’s short story Story of Your Life, the film follows Banks as she works to decode an alien language and forge human-alien understanding.

Villeneuve considered Adams his first choice for the role, which she accepted within 24 hours of receiving the script. Drawn to the film’s themes of empathy and connection, Adams immersed herself in linguistics documentaries and even learned basic Mandarin with a dialect coach to prepare.

Although Arrival became a commercial and critical success, earning over $200 million worldwide, Adams’s omission from the Academy Awards nominations sparked widespread backlash, especially given her Golden Globe and BAFTA nods.

Despite being nominated for Best Actress at various prestigious awards like the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, Screen Actors Guild awards, Critics Choice awards, and even the Saturn Awards, Amy Adams notably did not receive an Academy Award nomination for her performance as Louise Banks in Arrival, a decision widely regarded as a significant snub by critics, audiences, and major film organizationsDespite being nominated for multiple Best Actress awards, Amy Adams was widely considered snubbed by the Oscars for her performance in Arrival (Credit: Paramount Pictures)

Critics praised her performance as a masterclass in emotional nuance. The Atlantic described it as “mesmerizingly open, by turns uplifting and sorrowful,” while the Los Angeles Times highlighted her ability to “quietly and effectively meld intelligence, empathy, and reserve.”
