Carey Mulligan exuded edge and sophistication in a timeless neutral gown that made me look twice as she attended the Berlin International Film Festival premiere of her latest sci-fi drama, Spaceman, with Adam Sandler on Wednesday.

The event came just days after stunning us in a bespoke black Dior gown over the weekend at the BAFTA Awards. Adam Sandler is approximately 9.6 cm (or about 3.8 inches) taller than Carey Mulligan, with their heights being 5ft 9 ¾ (177.2 cm) and 5ft 6 (167.6 cm), respectively.

Spaceman: A Cinematic Journey

Spaceman is based on Jaroslav Kalfař’s 2017 novel Spaceman of Bohemia, which you can buy on Amazon. In the narrative, Adam Sandler plays Czech astronaut Jakub Procházka. He is sent on a solo mission to the solar system’s edge and encounters Hanuš, an extraterrestrial spider (voiced by Paul Dano) who helps him with his earthly problems. Mulligan plays Procházka’s pregnant wife, Lenka, who’s alone back on Earth.

Following its world premiere at the 74th Berlinale, Spaceman had its limited theatrical release on Friday, February 23. It will be available for streaming on Netflix on Match 1.

A Glimpse into the Berlinale Premiere Look

Carey Mulligan, who has been busy attending awards shows and competing for Best Actress as Felicia Montealegre in the biopic Maestro, has begun the promotional tour for her most recent film, Spaceman, and she’s doing it in style.

For the Berlinale premiere of the movie, the 38-year-old actress donned a look straight off Schiaparelli’s Spring 2024 runway.

Mulligan’s outfit, designed by creative director Daniel Roseberry, showcased the French label’s signature use of innovative materials. Her eccentric dress had a simple black velvet strapless design up front, but what made it stand out was the playful, unexpected beige drapery that flowed down the back and wrapped around the hem.

The fact that Mulligan chose an unconventional style instead of sticking with her typical fitted suits and traditional red-carpet ensembles surprised me. While I am not a fan of the gown, particularly the drapery that abruptly cut the black dress, Mulligan managed to pull off the eccentric design effortlessly.

Styling and Accessories

Originally worn by Irina Shayk on the runway with nude heels, Mulligan opted to pair hers with classic black pointed-toe pumps by Armani, which I think created a more cohesive look. These court shoes are made of plush velvet, have an asymmetrical top line, and are finished with 4-inch heels.

Mulligan looked exquisite at the event thanks to stylist Andrew Mukamal, who accessorized her with a ring and a pair of diamond stud earrings by Fred Leighton and Kwiat Diamonds, leaving her neck bare. Instead of going overboard with the accessories, Mukamal let the eccentric yet stylish ensemble steal the show.

Mulligan kept the focus on the couture by applying little makeup that accentuated her inherent beauty. Nina Park gave her soft pink makeup with eyeshadow, blush, and lipstick, while Jenny Cho styled her short blonde bob.

Photocall Fashion: A Futuristic Twist

Mulligan added a touch of a space-age element to her typical sartorial flair for the photocall earlier in the day.

Her petite form was highlighted by her well-tailored black suit, which consisted of slim-fitting pants and a fitted jacket.

I like how the architectural pointed Pagoda shoulders and the flared hem added character to the otherwise basic black suit. It also included a waistband that brought attention to her tiny waist.

Her tapered pants featured a pleated front and a split hem with zip detailing.

Most of you will probably agree that Mulligan’s exquisitely tailored black attire is best complemented with classic black heels. Mulligan did, in fact, wear the all-time celebrity favorite Manolo Blahnik “BB” pumps in black leather with a flattering pointy toe and 4-inch skinny heels.

Given that Spaceman is a science-fiction movie, I think we will see more futuristic and unconventional styles on Mulligan when the press tour for her most recent film kicks off.

Keeping the rest of her accessories sleek and sophisticated, Mulligan donned a pair of Anita Ko “Zoe” Braided Huggies and a matching Large “Zoe” ring.

Embracing the Classics at BAFTA

Although red is the trending color this season, nothing still compares to a timeless black red-carpet gown, like Carey Mulligan’s outfit at last week’s BAFTAs.

Inspired by the “Autriche” gown designed for Dior’s Fall 1951 Haute Couture collection, Mulligan’s strapless dress featured a fitted bodice with classic corsetry and rosette-like bra cups.

The gorgeous gown was fitted at the waist and fanned out into a full, floor-sweeping skirt with a train trailing behind her every step.

Her stylist, Andrew Mukamal, accessorized the classic gown with a lavish Bulgari necklace, which I think gave the otherwise simple black gown some flair and depth. She also added a pair of Bulgari diamond stud earrings, a great investment piece that can be passed down through generations.

Jenny Cho and Nina Park completed Mulligan’s old Hollywood look with a swipe of red lipstick and a deep side part hairstyle with curled ends.
