In 2004, Emmy Rossum had her breakthrough role as Laura Chapman in Roland Emmerich’s eco-disaster film The Day After Tomorrow. For her performance, she was nominated for Breakthrough Female at the 2005 MTV Movie Awards.
Playing the friend and love interest of Samuel “Sam” Hall (Jake Gyllenhaal), Rossum got the role after Lindsay Lohan had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.

Behind the Scenes: Rossum’s Nerves and a ‘Third Eye’
Emmy Rossum, only 16 when filming The Day After Tomorrow began, shared how nervous she was about her first big film and having to kiss her co-star, Jake Gyllenhaal.
“I was filming The Day After Tomorrow, it was my first big film, and I had to kiss Jake Gyllenhaal, so I was really nervous. The night before, I got a big zit and, stupidly, I picked at it, so then it was bigger and infected and had a scab over it. Jake called it my ‘third eye,'” Rossum told Interview magazine.
When filming started in September 2002, the actress was just 16 years old and did not believe her co-star would be interested in kissing. “He’s never going to want to kiss me now!” she added about her acne. Jake Gyllenhaal, born on December 19, 1980, was 21 when filming started.

Subtle Connections: The Day After Tomorrow and Mystic River
On the bookshelf behind Jack Hall, played by Dennis Quaid, in The Day After Tomorrow, are the novels Sacred and Gone, Baby, Gone by Dennis Lehane, who also wrote Mystic River. In the film adaptation of Mystic River, Emmy Rossum played Katie Markum, a key character whose death drives the plot.
A major international success, The Day After Tomorrow was released in the United States on May 28, 2004. Just a few months later, on September 12, 2004, she turned 18.
A decade after her breakout role in The Day After Tomorrow, Emmy Rossum’s style had evolved significantly, reflecting her growth as an actress and a fashion icon. In 2014, she showcased her refined sense of style at Fox’s Cause for Paws event, demonstrating her enduring presence in the spotlight.
