At the Los Angeles special screening of Is This Thing On? at the Vidiots, boots were a popular choice among the guests. The movie’s stars, Laura Dern and Andra Day, arrived wearing interesting boots, while host Kristen Wiig also opted for a stylish pair. What made it more interesting was how each of them wore their boots differently.

Laura went for a modern, sleek look in an archival Marc Jacobs burgundy-and-black ensemble, paired with burgundy knee-high boots that gave her look a polished, cohesive finish. Andra opted for a sultrier direction with a black lace Blumarine ensemble that revealed hints of skin, balanced by pointed-toe boots. Kristen Wiig kept things polished in black Khaite tailoring, pairing a blazer and cropped pants with studded ankle boots for a relaxed, edgy finish.

Is This Thing On?, now in theaters, follows an estranged couple, Tess Novak (Laura Dern) and Alex Novak (Will Arnett), as they navigate the messy, often humorous realities of divorce, co-parenting, and rediscovering themselves. The film is directed by Bradley Cooper, who also takes on the role of Alex’s best friend, Balls. Andra Day plays Christine, Balls’ wife.

Laura Dern Anchors an Archival Marc Jacobs Dress With Burgundy Knee-High Boots

Looking cohesive from head to toe, she stepped out in a color-blocked Marc Jacobs Fall 2011 dress, originally worn on the runway by Jourdan Dunn, that balanced rich autumn tones with sharp, modern lines.

The deep burgundy shade, which appeared to be crafted from plush suede, stood out immediately, especially against her complexion, adding warmth and depth without feeling heavy.

What really worked for me was the bodice. The bold black panel visually cinched Laura’s frame, creating not just a clear contrast against the burgundy fabric but also a flattering shape. It naturally drew attention upward and gave the dress a more modern feel.

The burgundy fabric then flowed smoothly down the body, keeping the silhouette clean and flattering. Her skirt skimmed Laura’s figure effortlessly, highlighting her slim frame before hitting right at the knee. The light gray ribbed collar framed the neckline nicely and softened the strong color blocking.

To keep things sleek and polished, Laura layered on a black tailored blazer with sharp shoulders. This added a touch of authority without overshadowing the dress.

Gold Jewelry and Tonal Knee-High Boots Create a Cohesive Finish

Her accessories were bold but elegant. Dangling gold earrings with linked chunky oval shapes added radiance to her beauty, while a couple of statement gold rings added warmth to the outfit’s muted color palette. Her blonde hair fell in relaxed waves, paired with soft, dewy pink makeup that kept her look fresh and approachable.

Those burgundy knee-high boots truly sealed the deal. Structured with pointed toes, they echoed the dress’s rich hue, creating a seamless, head-to-toe finish that felt undeniably fall-ready.

Andra Day Balances Sheer Blumarine Lace With Soft Taupe Pointed-Toe Boots

Unlike Laura Dern’s modest, modern approach, Andra Day fully embraced a sultry mood. She stepped out in a bold, unapologetically eye-catching black lace two-piece ensemble from Blumarine. The look instantly commanded attention, but what really stood out to me was how well the elements worked together.

The sheer black lace-insert sweater, called the “Marabu,” looked intricate, with floral patterns at the décolletage that transitioned into a chevron design along the midriff and long sleeves.

The see-through fabric hugged Andra’s figure, highlighting her curves in a flattering way. The high neckline helped balance the sheer lace’s sexiness, while the fuzzy ostrich feather cuffs added drama and texture. You can find this top at Farfetch, retailing for $1,492.

Andra paired the top with black knickers, visible beneath a matching lace maxi skirt. The skirt, crafted from see-through rebrodé lace, featured a tiered design that gave it a romantic, vintage feel. It hugged her thighs before flowing into a flared hem with soft tiers that added movement and drama. It’s currently on sale for $1,031 (from $1,740) at Farfetch.

Smoky Glam and Neutral-Toned Boots Temper the Sheer Silhouette

Her beauty look complemented the outfit perfectly. I loved her smoky eye makeup paired with fluttery lashes, softened by peachy blush and a two-tone lip. Her braided crown and loose, wavy ponytail showcased her bold gold hoop and orbital earrings effortlessly.

Finishing the look were beige taupe boots with pointed square toes and metal flared heels. They featured a western-inspired silhouette, thanks to the structured shape and side panel detailing. I particularly loved how the muted taupe color created an unexpected contrast that softened Andra’s entire appearance and kept it from looking overly heavy or typical.

While others might have reached for classic black boots or sleek pumps, this lighter, earthy tone brought a fresh balance to the look!

Kristen Wiig Sharpens Khaite Tailoring With Studded Black Ankle Boots

Kristen Wiig looked naturally polished and confident, striking that effortless balance between structure and ease. She wore a black tailored suit by Khaite, which I thought was a smart and fitting choice as the night’s host.

Her blazer had an oversized silhouette, giving it a relaxed, modern feel. At the same time, the sharp notched lapels, clean pockets, and buttoned cuffs added just enough definition to keep the tailoring crisp. The fabric itself had a subtle sheen that caught the light enough to keep the all-black look from feeling flat, elevating the entire look while staying true to its minimalist mood.

Underneath, Wiig appeared to be wearing a black bodysuit with a deep plunging neckline that dipped to her sternum. I liked how it balanced the blazer’s relaxed tailoring with a quiet, understated sexiness. The trousers were more fitted through the leg and finished with a subtle gloss, giving them a sleek, modern feel. However, the creasing was distracting at certain angles.

Minimal Jewelry and Studded Boots Add Edge to Clean Tailoring

Kristen kept the styling minimal, wearing tiny hoop earrings and a long gold chain necklace with a Foundrae heart pendant that added just the right amount of shine to the all-black outfit. Her shoulder-length hair was worn in loose, tousled waves, while her makeup stayed soft, with pink blush, mascara, and a natural lip, keeping everything fresh.

Instead of classic pumps, she went with black studded boots, which added texture and just the right amount of edge, breaking up the clean tailoring. The studs gave the outfit a bit of attitude, keeping it from feeling too safe or predictable. They added contrast to the polished lines of the blazer and trousers!
