On December 9, 2015, The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Breakfast brought together some of the industry’s most influential figures at Milk Studios in West Hollywood.

Among the attendees were Lena Dunham and Kris Jenner, who arrived in dramatically different looks but shared a similar approach to footwear: letting statement outfits take center stage while relying on designer heels to complete the look.

Below, we take a closer look at two notable shoe moments from the event, from Lena Dunham’s understated pointed-toe pumps to Kris Jenner’s towering Saint Laurent platforms.

1. Lena Dunham Balanced Her Eclectic MSGM Outfit With Matt Bernson “Royale” Pumps

Lena Dunham, then 29, attended the breakfast after earning a spot on THR’s Power 100 list for the second consecutive year.

“Some girls who grew up in the ‘90s dreamt of a luxury cruise with N’Sync, but my fantasy has always been a room full of Hollywood power bitches enjoying breakfast foods,” she said as she took to the podium.

True to her personal style, she embraced bold pattern mixing in an MSGM paisley blouse and fringe-trimmed skirt, creating one of the event’s most memorable daytime looks.

She teamed a paisley-printed blouse with tassel detailing and a knitted-fringe A-line skirt, both from Italian brand MSGM. The eclectic mix might not appeal to many, but the quirkiness works for her and her personality.

Lena kept her accessories to a minimum — with only a ring and a pair of Irene Neuwirth earrings — in order to let the outfit do the talking. Lena added a bit of edge to the look by sweeping her hair back and wearing shimmering eye shadow and nude lipstick.

Many observers questioned Lena Dunham’s understated footwear choice, but the black pumps arguably worked in the outfit’s favor. With the paisley print, fringe detailing, and layered textures already commanding attention, a simpler shoe prevented the look from feeling overwhelmed. She completed the ensemble with Matt Bernson “Royale” pumps, a pointed-toe style set on a modest three-inch heel.

At the time, Matt Bernson was known for thoughtfully crafted footwear that balanced practicality with downtown New York style.

While the brand has since scaled back from its former retail footprint and closed its flagship stores, many of its most recognizable designs remain sought after on the resale market. The “Royale” pumps exemplified that approach, offering a clean, versatile silhouette that complemented rather than competed with Dunham’s statement-making MSGM separates.

While Dunham opted for relatively restrained footwear to ground an already busy ensemble, Kris Jenner took the opposite approach. Her look paired a playful fringe dress with one of Saint Laurent’s most recognizable platform silhouettes of the era.

2. Kris Jenner Added Height and Drama With Saint Laurent “Janis” Platform Pumps

Kris Jenner also attended The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Breakfast at Milk Studios, arriving in a fringe-embellished Anna K dress that reflected the event’s youthful, fashion-forward mood.

Why Saint Laurent’s “Janis” Pumps Became a Defining Platform Shoe of the 2010s

The Saint Laurent “Janis” platform pumps were among the brand’s signature footwear styles during the Hedi Slimane era. Defined by their towering block platform, sky-high stiletto heel, pointed toe, and Mary Jane-inspired strap, the design combined 1970s glam-rock influences with Saint Laurent’s modern edge.

The substantial platform helped offset the dramatic heel height, making the silhouette more wearable than its measurements suggested while creating a noticeably elongated leg line.

For Jenner, the glossy black patent finish echoed the playful movement of her fringe-trimmed Anna K dress without competing for attention. The pumps added height and structure to an otherwise lighthearted look, demonstrating why the Janis became one of Saint Laurent’s most recognizable platform styles of the mid-2010s.
