HBO’s provocative series, The Idol, first turned heads at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it earned a five-minute standing ovation.

The project is the brainchild of Abel Tesfaye—better known as The Weeknd—and Sam Levinson, the visionary behind HBO’s Euphoria.

With Lily-Rose Depp stepping into the role of Jocelyn, a pop star unraveling after her mother’s death, the show sparked conversation well before its release. But at Cannes, it wasn’t just the storyline that captured attention—the cast’s bold red-carpet fashion set the tone.

As a Chanel House Ambassador since 2015—when Karl Lagerfeld personally chose her as the brand’s youngest face—Lily-Rose has become synonymous with the French fashion house.

Having fronted campaigns for eyewear, fragrance, and cosmetics, and walked in its runway shows, her choice of vintage Chanel at Cannes felt both profoundly personal and perfectly on brand, a throwback reminder that heritage design and statement shoes can elevate a television premiere into a high-fashion moment.

Abel Tesfaye chose a custom Loewe tuxedo elevated with Tiffany & Co. jewels and a Piaget watch.

Lily-Rose Depp delivered one of the night’s standout moments in a strapless black sequin mini dress with a blue camellia appliqué, a rare archival piece from Chanel’s Fall 1994 collection, styled with sheer opera gloves, stockings, and satin pumps.

Director Sam Levinson balanced the trio’s looks in a two-tone Valentino tuxedo, pairing a crisp white dinner jacket with classic black trousers for a touch of contrast.
