A campaign fit for legends only, Kylie Minogue is the face of the Jimmy Choo and Jean Paul Gaultier shoe collaboration.

When creative directors Sandra Choi of Jimmy Choo and Florence Tétier of Jean Paul Gaultier got together for the epic collaboration between the two iconic brands, only one name popped up: Kylie Minogue.

“She was very into it and she told us anecdotes of when she met Jean Paul,” Tétier said in an interview with Choi for WWD. “This is something which is super important for me, to work with people who make sense with the brand, they don’t have to be old friends of the brand, but they have to have a story about the brand and she really did.”

The Padam Padam hitmaker has graced several stages in several custom Jean Paul Gaultier looks and has stepped out in a multitude of Jimmy Choo designs for years.

It was natural that the legendary entertainer would front the campaign for the legendary collaboration, a cultural milestone.

A Bold Footwear Vision: Tattoo Prints, Sheer Pumps, and Couture Edge

Shot by French photographer Valentin Herfray and styled by Katie Grand, Kylie Minogue poses in different heel styles, sports tattoo prints, and embodies the role of a pin-up girl with a post-modern edge.

As reported by WWD, “the six-piece collaboration is a fusion of practicality and wit,” featuring classic designs from Jimmy Choo with references to Jean Paul Gaultier’s earlier collections.

Design Inspirations: From Gaultier’s 1994 Tattoos to Glass-Heeled Pumps

For instance, a nude pump and an over-the-knee boot are decorated with tattoos, referencing Gaultier’s Les Tatouages Spring 1994 collection.

“Jimmy Choo would never ever cover the design details in tattoos, so I copped into those identities because all of the elements have to do with identity,” Choi stated.

Tétier added that another key design they had in mind was the trompe l’oeil, as seen on a denim over-the-knee boot. A classic pump also featured a glass block heel with two iconic landmarks: Big Ben and the Eiffel Tower.

Choi and Tétier’s Creative Vision: Rebellion, Identity, and Couture Cool

Choi said that the design is “totally moody, grungy and fashion. It’s black, skin, silver, white – it’s so monotone, but it’s punchy.

“It’s because of the nature of the brand’s aesthetic and what it stands for, whether it’s pop culture or just being truly rebellious – to have that platform and point of view in fashion was always important as a young person growing up,” Choi, a longtime Gaultier fan, added.

Regarding the collaboration between the two brands, Choi said she wanted to team up with a label that wasn’t so “obvious, but also slightly uncomfortable.”

As for Tétier, she shared her way of working at the French label: imagine what the founder would be doing if he were 30 years old while remaining respectful of the brand’s rich history. “It’s about this mix of established brands and super young people finding the right balance.”

The collection, which features limited-edition designs, costs $975 to $2,450. You can browse the different shoe styles and shop your favorites online at Farfetch, Mytheresa, and in select stores globally.
