Akerman’s personal experiences inspired her involvement with On Our Sleeves, an organization that promotes conversations about mental health within families.

Sometimes her mother, part-time model Pia (née Sundström), would isolate herself in her room for days, while she would be joyful in their lives other times. Akerman empathizes with those who face depression and expresses her support for anyone dealing with the condition.
