How Rodney Peete and Holly Robinson’s Love Story Started

Rodney Peete and Holly Robinson Peete’s enduring love story began with an unexpected twist, proving that sometimes, first impressions don’t tell the whole story. Holly tied the knot with Rodney in 1995, but their journey to love was more complex than it might seem.

Their paths crossed in June 1993, courtesy of a mutual friend, Lela Rochon, setting them up. Despite his charm and good looks, Holly remained wary of dating Rodney, given the typical athlete lifestyle.

In a New York Times interview in March 2018, she recalled, “We went to a nightclub in L.A. He was super cute and he was nice, but I wasn’t impressed with the whole athlete thing, or the groupies or distance.”

But Rodney saw potential where Holly saw skepticism. In an October 2020 interview with Essence, Rodney shared the moment he fell for her, saying, “She put hot sauce on her fries. I knew she felt comfortable around me as she stuffed her face with food.”

After an “Eat, Pray, Love”-esque trip to Bali to find direction in her life, Holly returned to Los Angeles. Lela invited her to another gathering, this time at Rodney’s house.

Reluctantly, Holly went, but the party atmosphere didn’t resonate with her. She detailed, “It turned out he lived five minutes away from my house. There were 8 guys and 30 girls. This wasn’t my kind of party, so I found the food, and then left.”

Shortly after leaving the party, there was a knock on Holly’s door – it was Rodney. His words, “The party was over when you left,” changed the course of their story.

Holly said, “That line was good enough to buy me a real date. He took me to a wine-tasting party. I’d never been to one before and I thought maybe he’s not the typical jock.”

Despite her initial hesitation, Holly found herself falling for Rodney. Their journey continued to unfold, leading to a proposal in front of a live studio audience while filming Holly’s show Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper after a year of dating.

Holly’s Epic Wedding Surprise for Rodney

Holly Robinson Peete and Rodney Peete’s love story is peppered with unforgettable moments, and their epic wedding is no exception. Tying the knot on June 10, 1995, in Brentwood, California, the couple embarked on a journey of surprises that would leave a lasting mark.

When planning their wedding, Holly knew she wanted to create a memorable surprise for her husband. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE in February 2023, she disclosed, “In 1994, Rodney shocked and surprised me with what I think is arguably the best proposal ever on the set of Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper. I was determined to get him back! Well, I did on our wedding day.”

On their wedding day, Holly managed to pull off a surprise that stunned Rodney. She had orchestrated the appearance of the entire University of Southern California (USC) marching band, a true feat considering their numbers.

Knowing that Rodney, a former USC quarterback, held a deep connection with the school, Holly arranged for the band to wait in a bus down the hill from the venue for about an hour before they had to come up.

Holly shared the excitement, recalling, “He was shocked. I got my Trojan QB back good! They played the USC fight song up and down the aisle, and I think Rodney and his Trojan groomsmen all got teary-eyed! I will never stop being grateful to Mr. Art Bartner, USC and this band for that moment! ‘Fight On!'”

Expanding Their Family and Dealing with Autism

Holly and Rodney welcomed four children, each with their unique story. Their twins, Rodney Jr. and daughter Ryan Elizabeth, were born on October 19, 1997.

Their family expanded with sons Robinson James, born on August 11, 2002, and Roman, born on February 25, 2005.

However, Rodney Jr. was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. This news shook both Holly and Rodney to their core.

In the same Essence interview, Holly recalled her initial response: “When we got that news, I curled up for almost two weeks with the curtains down. In those days they gave you no hope.”

Rodney, too, struggled with the revelation, grappling with a sense of helplessness. He admitted, “It was a blow to my manhood… I was stuck on ‘I’m going to fix my son.’”

It was a trying time for the family, with emotions running high. Holly issued an ultimatum, with Rodney detailing, “Get on board or get out of the way, which means leave. My family was most important, so I got on board. Once I understood that I didn’t have to change him, everything was going to be okay. She deserves all the credit for that. That was the biggest obstacle we had to overcome and it brought us closer.”

In 1997, Holly and Rodney channeled their experiences into action, founding the HollyRod Foundation. This charitable organization was born from a place of deep personal connection.

With Holly’s father’s Parkinson’s disease and their son’s autism diagnosis, they dedicated themselves to raising funds and awareness to combat Parkinson’s disease and autism.

Holly’s commitment to raising awareness about autism continued with her 2010 children’s book, “My Brother Charlie.” Co-authored with her daughter Ryan Elizabeth, the book offered a glimpse into their family’s journey based on their experiences with Rodney Jr.

The book garnered awards and accolades, including the Dolly Gray Children’s Literature Award and an NAACP Image Award, shedding light on the challenges and triumphs of living with an autistic child.

The Couple’s Secret to a Strong and Long-Lasting Marriage

After 28 years of marriage, Rodney and Holly Peete have discovered the essence of maintaining a solid and enduring bond. Their journey is a testament to the power of effective communication, counseling, and a touch of unique techniques.

In an interview with Essence in March 2023, Holly emphasized the foundation of their strong relationship: “For us, the glue, the secret sauce has been trying to stay on the same page. Continuing to communicate with each other and then Rodney Peete’s willingness to talk to a therapist or marriage counselor has been key, key, key.”

Rodney highlighted the role of respect and communication in their journey, adding, “We both had similar ideas of what we wanted for our lives, separately and collectively, and we talked about it. We talked about it with a third party. We talked about the journey and what it was going to be and how it was going to be and how to handle certain things that would come up in our lives along the way.”

He added, “We found ourselves getting on the same page before we got married. So knowing that, when things could come up, we would be able to revert to some of the tools that we had early on and then still continue on with the counseling. That was important — that and being able to evolve together was a really important thing as well.”

Their marriage is also enriched by Rodney’s unique technique for resolving disputes: the 20-second hug.

He revealed, “I came up with the 20-second hug. No matter how mad you are, if one asks for the hug, it’s mandatory. It’s embracing and emotional. That runs through you while you’re not saying anything. You slow down. You become less angry. It reminds you of why you’re together.”

The Peetes also exemplify evolving gender dynamics. Holly’s financial independence and success did not threaten Rodney; instead, he embraced them.

Rodney emphasized, “Society tells us you’re less of a man if your wife is more successful. I don’t buy into any of that. If I’ve got to take the kids to practice or a concert because she’s on the road filming, I have no problem with that, because it’s a partnership and a family.”
