Award shows these days are no longer just about celebrities dressing up in their best gowns and suits and winning trophies. They are now also used to address political and social issues.
This awards season, sustainability has been one of the key trends among the institutions to help reduce environmental impact.
Following Golden Globes’ sustainability measures, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts also joined the movement and served vegan dishes on the menu.
A spokesperson told Harper’s Bazaar: “Sustainability is very important to BAFTA, and we’re doing more than ever before.”
“The goal is that the EE British Academy Film Awards 2020 will be carbon neutral, working towards having a net positive impact on the environment. From travel and food, to branding and materials, BAFTA is ensuring the awards are as sustainable as possible.”
In addition to the vegan menu, the organizers sent out a set of sustainable fashion guidelines to the attendees as part of an attempt to reduce the production of carbon footprint.
In the guideline, created by the London College of Fashion’s Centre for Sustainability, guests were encouraged to rent clothes, purchase vintage, re-wear looks that they have worn before or wear a more earth-friendly look.
However, it seemed like not everyone got the memo. Stars gathered at the Royal Albert Hall for the ceremony and many wore looks straight off the runway. But style-wise, the red carpet didn’t disappoint.
Aside from Renée Zellweger, Charlize Theron, and Florence Pugh, below are some of the interesting looks from the 2020 BAFTA red carpet.
1. Scarlett Johansson Oozes Sex Appeal in Versace
Scarlett Johansson was up for Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, respectively.
Although she didn’t take home any gongs, she was already a winner on the red carpet in her ‘20s-inspired Atelier Versace gown, which reportedly took 550 hours to make.
Scarlett was oozing sex appeal in the striking crystal beaded pink dress that highlighted her hourglass figure. It features sexy cutout details, a cleavage-baring neckline, a feathered train, and a thigh-high slit.

Styled by Molly Dickson, the blonde bombshell teamed her outfit with Nikos Koulis white diamonds and gray drop earrings.
To complement her dress, makeup artist Frankie Boyd applied shimmery pink eyeshadow, matching lipgloss, and pink blush. Hairstylist Danilo styled her blonde tresses up in a sleek chignon.

2. Margot Robbie Goes for Vintage-Inspired Chanel Gown
Margot Robbie, Supporting Actress nominee for both Bombshell and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, opted for understated elegance in a black Chanel Spring 2020 Haute Couture gown.
The floor-length vintage-looking outfit features lace cape shoulders, a cinched waist with peplum detail, and a cutout back.

She accessorized with a pair of diamond earrings, a black flower ring, and a pair of black pumps, selected by her stylist Kate Young.
Hairstylist Bryce Scarlett pulled Margot’s peroxide blonde locks back and let a few strands fall loose on one side. Makeup artist Pati Dubroff lined her eyes and added a hint of sparkle on her lids.

3. Laura Dern Is a Winner in Red Valentino Gown
Laura Dern has been sweeping up awards this awards season. And on Sunday’s BAFTAs, she picked up another Best Supporting Actress gong for her role in Marriage Story.
The 52-year-old actress took to the stage in a stunning red velvet gown by Valentino Haute Couture. The halter dress features an elaborate bodice embellished with jewels and feathers. It also has a satin waistband and a floor-length skirt with side pockets.

Stylist Cristina Ehrlich kept Laura’s accessories to a minimum with just a pair of diamond earrings by Jessica McCormack. Her hair was styled into a center-parted ponytail with a slight bouffant and a few wisps framing her softly made-up face.

4. Saoirse Ronan in Ill-Fitting Gucci Ball Gown
Saoirse Ronan, who was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, opted for a Gucci gown that’s made from discarded satin.
Saorise’s stylist Elizabeth Saltzman told British Vogue: “We wanted to create a gown that didn’t waste any resources or people’s time.” “It’s the first time we’ve gone dead simple, but we’ve been geeking out about the intricate craftsmanship.”
The 25-year-old actress looked beautiful and her black ball gown was sexy yet elegant. However, it looked ill-fitting with its low-waist design and a bit overwhelming for her frame.

Saorise added some sparkle to her look with Gucci drop earrings and a bracelet. Her hair was styled in an artsy vintage-looking updo, while her vibrant coral lipstick and winged eyeliner elevated her look.

5. Naomie Harris Glistens in Michael Kors Metallic Gown
Bond girl Naomie Harris flaunted her toned figure in a custom Michael Kors Collection gown. She went braless underneath her metallic halter neck dress, which perfectly clung to her every curve. It is entirely embellished with silver and black sequins and has fringe detail, a low scoop neckline, and a thigh-high slit.

Masterminded by stylist Nicky Yates, Naomie accessorized her look with Jessica McCormack jewelry and a silver clutch. For her feet, she wore a pair of silver Jimmy Choo sandals.

Makeup artist Kenneth So applied a natural makeup look to the actress, while hairstylist Rio Sreedharan styled her hair in voluminous curls with a side parting.

6. Ella Balinska in a Twee Giambattista Valli Gown
Charlies Angels star Ella Balinska opted for a sweet floral look, wearing a Giambattista Valli Spring 2019 Haute Couture gown. She braved the weather in the pink high-low number, which has ruffle details and a dramatic train.

While it’s a bit unflattering, the 23-year-old actress still managed to pull it off. Her black Casadei pumps, however, didn’t complement the outfit’s soft, feminine vibe. A pair of silver sandals would have looked better with her dress and with her Cartier jewelry.

Her pink smokey eye-makeup, crafted by Vincent Oquendo, and high ponytail by Rio Sreedharan rounded out her look.

7. Greta Gerwig in a Flattering Gucci Gown
Loose-fitting, long-sleeved ankle-length dresses have been her signature style, so it was quite surprising to see Greta Gerwig in a gown that flatters her figure at the BAFTAs.
Nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for her movie Little Women, the 36-year-old actress and filmmaker wore a custom Gucci gown. It has a flattering fitted bodice that gently flares out to a softly pleated floor-sweeping skirt. It also has crystal-embellished straps and a sweetheart neckline that showed a glimpse of her cleavage.

She accessorized with a pair of diamond tassel earrings and a pair of silver heels. Her tousled short blonde locks, bold brushed up brows, and pink lipstick completed her stunning look.

8. Zoë Kravitz Is a Siren in Saint Laurent
Zoë Kravitz opted for a sleek gilded look in a metallic gold gown from Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello.
Channeling old Hollywood glamour, the embellished liquid gold gown highlighted her svelte figure with its nipped-in waist. It also has long sleeves and a floor-length skirt with a slit.

Instead of wearing gold jewelry, Zoe decided on a pair of Assael coral earrings, which offered a pop of color to the look. She also wore a slick of red lipstick and had her nails painted red by Ama Quashie.

The look, which was masterminded by stylist Andrew Mukamal, was completed with a pair of black sandals.

9. Pixie Lott Stuns in Sandra Mansour
Pixie Lott looked gorgeous in white on the red carpet. She opted for a Sandra Mansour creation, which features a form-fitting silhouette with tiered ruffle skirt.

She teamed her white midi dress with a pair of diamond drop earrings, a pearl-embellished clutch, and a pair of black sandals with crystal-embellished straps.

Hairstylist Gabrielle Thomson styled her peroxide blonde hair into a swept-back updo with a few face-framing strands. She then highlighted her eyes with eyeliner, shimmering eyeshadow, and false eyelashes, courtesy of Goddess Beauty by Athena.

10. Vanessa Kirby in Edgy Valentino Color-Block Dress
British actress Vanessa Kirby ditched floor-sweeping gowns for an edgier look at the BAFTAs. Highlighting her toned figure, she wore a Valentino Pre-Fall 2020 color-block belted dress, which features a heavily-embellished nude tank top and a burgundy skirt with crystal adornments and a feathered hem.

The 31-year-old actress finished off her look with Tiffany & Co. jewels and a pair of silver sandals.

She kept her beauty look edgy with black eyeliner, mascara, and maroon lipstick. She then wore her tresses down, sleek and parted in the middle.
