When Kung Fu Panda 4 premiered in March 2024, it marked a new chapter for the franchise and a notable fashion moment for its new lead, Awkwafina.

Joining Jack Black in the DreamWorks series, the actress embarked on a concentrated press tour through Los Angeles and New York City, showcasing a wardrobe built around a very specific footwear strategy: high-impact platform heels.

Standing at 5ft 1 in (154.9 cm), Awkwafina has often worn structured, sky-high footwear to balance her silhouette.

Her appearances for this film—ranging from morning talk shows to the “black carpet” premiere—serve as a practical study in how to wear heavy-soled boots and pumps with everything from streetwear to evening wear.

Beyond the fashion, the project reunited her with Black following their work on Jumanji: Next Level. While the chemistry in the recording booth centered on comedy, the press tour focused on elevating the petite frame through clever styling.

1. Cool-Girl Layers: Simkhai Bomber & Mini Skirt with Chunky Knee-High Platform Boots

Showcasing her cool-girl style that perfectly captures her fierce and unapologetic persona, Awkwafina arrived at the Today studios in a muted forest green quilted outfit consisting of a bomber jacket and a mini skirt by Simkhai.

The London-based label, created for the modern woman, is known for its innovative techniques and excellent craftsmanship, as evidenced by Awkwafina’s laid-back yet chic ensemble.

I love the cozy-looking mixed-media design of her “Rollins” bomber jacket ($595), which combines quilted, sleek sateen and cable-knit fabric.

It features a classic bomber jacket silhouette with a rib-knit baseball collar, rib-knit cuffs, a zipper-front closure, and flap pockets. The layered hem also adds a modern touch to the look.

Awkwafina wore a black mock-neck tee underneath her bomber jacket, which she paired with the coordinating “Ripley” mini skirt ($375).

What stands out most—beyond the padded quilting at the front—is the contrasting cable-knit back, which cleverly creates the illusion of a sweater tied at the waist. The elasticated waistband and A-line shape keep the silhouette easy and flattering, while flap pockets and a center zip add a subtle, utilitarian edge.

In keeping with the look’s edgy and playful style, Awkwafina wore sleek gold dangling earrings and black knee-high boots with chunky toes, platforms, and block heels.

2. Power Dressing, Petite-Proof: Oversized Blazer & Mini Skirt with White Platform Pumps

While exiting the Drew Barrymore Show studio, Awkwafina opted to power-dress, exuding a girl-boss vibe in an oversized gray checkered blazer and a miniskirt.

Despite her petite frame, the oversized menswear blazer feels intentional rather than overwhelming. Pairing it with a miniskirt introduces a feminine counterpoint that visually lengthens her silhouette—far more effective than the traditional trouser pairing, which would have weighed the look down.

The light gray color of the ensemble looked amazing against her complexion. She wore a white shirt underneath for a radiant look, finished with white platform pumps for a feminine flair.

I adore her shoes, but I would have preferred a pair of classic pointed-toe pumps for a more elongated look. They look sophisticated and feminine with ankle straps and low-cut vamps, yet sturdy with thick platforms and block heels.

A pair of textured silver hoop earrings and a black velvet bag with a silver chain strap completed her ensemble.

On her way to the Drew Barrymore studio, Awkwafina, wearing a minidress cut from a shiny, velvety fabric, opted for a girly look.

The dress leans statement-driven, but the silhouette feels less resolved—the dramatic puff shoulders and peplum hem add interest, yet the looser fit softens the overall structure rather than sharpening it.

The styling feels a touch pared back, leaving the look slightly unfinished. While the intention may have been to keep the focus on the dress, a few understated accessories—delicate jewelry or a refined accent—would have added balance and polish without overwhelming the silhouette.

A silver clutch and a pair of silver heels would have added sophistication to her otherwise plain navy-blue dress.

4. Red Carpet Drama: Georges Hobeika Feather Mini Dress with Silver Larroudé Platform Heels

For the Kung Fu Panda 4 premiere last week, Awkwafina decided to add a splash of color to the black carpet by wearing an exquisite pink-and-red dress from Georges Hobeika’s Spring 2022 collection.

The Paradise Hills star flashed her pearly whites while posing for photographers at AMC The Grove, looking as cheerful as her shirt-and-mini-dress.

While many probably raised their eyebrows at the daring, often divisive color combination, which some may find excessive, I think it’s fun and stylish.

The clear crystals adorning the collar and chest pocket gave the outfit a touch of glitter, while the embellished buttons and red ostrich-feather hem added a hint of ’70s flair.

I initially had reservations about the dress as I thought it was too girly and youthful for the actress. But considering the movie’s theme, I guess it’s just befitting for the event.

Erica Cloud styled Awkwafina’s red-carpet look, adding a few minimalist Jennifer Meyer dangling earrings and rings to let the dress speak for itself.

She kept the accessories cohesive by finishing her look with silver Larroudé peep-toe heels secured at the ankles with slim ankle straps. They have thick, metallic platforms finished with chunky block heels for added height.

As for her glam, Emily Cheng gave Awkwafina soft pink makeup with blush, lipstick, and eyeshadow, and added thick mascara to create fluttery eyelashes.

Kylee Heath styled her raven tresses in her signature gorgeous waves, with a thin rhinestone headband for added sparkle.

Kung Fu Panda 4: A Journey to Becoming the Valley of Peace Spiritual Leader

As the fourth installment unfolds, Po faces a turning point: he must choose a successor before stepping into his role as the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace. His search leads him to Zhen, a quick-witted corsac fox voiced by Awkwafina, whose motives aren’t immediately clear.

What follows is a high-stakes journey to Juniper City, where shifting loyalties, a shapeshifting villain, and the return of familiar foes complicate Po’s final chapter as the Dragon Warrior. Zhen’s betrayal—and eventual change of heart—becomes central to the story’s emotional arc.

In the end, Po restores balance, returns stolen power to its rightful masters, and names Zhen as his successor—closing one chapter while setting up the next.

This isn’t the first time Awkwafina lent her voice to an animated movie.

She voiced Courtney, the female pig in the Angry Birds Movie 2 in 2019; Sisu, the last dragon in the 2021 Walt Disney Animation Raya and the Last Dragon; Ms. Tarantula, the sarcastic hacker tarantula in the 2022 DreamWorks Animation film The Bad Guys; and Scuttle, a dimwitted northern gannet in the 2023 Walt Disney movie The Little Mermaid.

Across press tours, premieres, and daytime appearances, Awkwafina consistently returns to one defining styling choice: statement footwear that adds height, structure, and personality.
