Nicole Richie is back on the big screen in the coming-of-age black comedy Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, a remake of the 1991 cult classic movie of the same name.

Released in cinemas on Friday, April 12, the film stars Simone Joy Jones as Tanya Crandell and Richie as Rose Lindsey, the boss of the fashion company Tanya works for. Richie describes her character as a boss trying “to keep her employees’ energy up” through her vibrant wardrobe choices.

But for her guest appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Richie opted for a rather somber look from Saint Laurent.

Contrasting Characters: Rose vs. Richie

Richie told WWD that her character “feels the pressure to keep the energy of her business going even though the energy has kind of come to a stagnant place.”

“And I think for Rose, it’s very important for her to wear bright colors. I think that is something she is doing to keep her employees’ energy up, as well,” she added. “For her, especially, her costumes are really a form of keeping that energy alive.”

While her outfit for her TV appearance contrasts greatly with her new movie character, I like the intriguing and mysterious vibe it conveys.

A Closer Look at Richie’s Outfit on Fallon

I initially thought Richie was wearing a tight-fitting LBD, but upon closer look, I realized she was clad in a two-piece ensemble.

Decked out in head-to-toe Saint Laurent, Nicole highlighted her figure in a crossneck bodysuit top, $1,350 at FWRD, made in Italy from a ribbed knit fabric. Though the outfit’s focal point is the sexy cutout back, I like how the crossing halterneck accentuates the shoulders and provides a flattering, feminine appearance.

Nicole tucked the form-fitting bodysuit into a high-waisted knee-length pencil skirt that you can buy for $1,850 at FWRD. I think it was a clever move, as it created the illusion of an LBD.

She further enhanced the appearance of a makeshift little black dress by adding a black leather belt with a massive gold-tone buckle from Saint Laurent. The “La 76” leather belt can be yours for $575 at Mytheresa.

I like this style because it’s subtle and classic. Given the more intimate details, it’s safe to say it’s a seductive interpretation of quiet luxury.

Richie’s Gothic-Inspired Accessory Choices

Richie teamed the sophisticated ensemble with black tights as a nod to her iconic Gothic roots. Although the reference to her gothic era is great, I think the appearance would have been better without it.

She also wore a black leather motorcycle jacket slung off her shoulders and hung in the crook of her elbows. It was a great accent, giving the otherwise classy outfit a sleek, edgy finish.

Nicole completed her all-black look with classic black pumps, allowing the ensemble to take center stage. She wore the Saint Laurent “Anja” pumps, retailing for $875 at Mytheresa, Net-a-Porter, and FWRD.

Made in Italy from polished goat leather, these pumps have low-cut vamps that showcase the toe cleavage. They also have almond toes and 3.5-inch square stiletto heels.

Wearing her two-tone black and blonde hair pin straight, with the front tucked behind her ears, Nicole flaunted her dangling geometric-shaped gold earrings.

Sofia Richie’s stepsister opted for a subtle, peach-toned makeup look, accentuating her eyes with thick mascara and eyeliner. She later covered them with Saint Laurent “Mica” cat-eye acetate-framed sunglasses, available for $420 at FWRD.

Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (2024): A Remake

Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead remake follows Tanya Crandell, a 17-year-old high school graduate excited about her ultimate summer vacation in Spain. But things take a turn for the worse when her widowed mom (Ms. Pat) suffers a nervous breakdown and decides to go to a wellness retreat in Thailand as part of her treatment. Mrs. Crandell rushes to hire an elderly babysitter, Mrs. Sturak (June Squibb), to watch the kids. However, Mrs. Sturak suddenly passes away on the first night. The kids decide to dispose of the babysitter’s body and keep it a secret from their mom so as not to interfere with her retreat.

With no adult supervision, the kids must fend for themselves. Seeking employment, Tanya decides to fake her resume and pose as a woman in her mid-20s. She gets a job at a struggling fashion company headed by Rose Lindsey (Nicole Richie).

Director Wade Allain-Marcus told Entertainment Weekly, “Don’t Tell Mom has always been about becoming an adult before your time, and we know that’s true for all Black kids. Everyone involved in the film brought their A-game — come for the laughs, stay for the heart, the vibe, and the music.”

Nicole Richie, meanwhile, said she’s a fan of the iconic 1991 movie and “having the opportunity to play Rose is a dream come true.”
