The once-king and queen of romantic comedy movies, Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon, are set to reclaim their thrones with another rom-com movie, Your Place or Mine.
The romantic-comedy genre experienced a resurgence in 2022 with hits like Jennifer Lopez’s Marry Me and Julia Roberts’ Ticket to Paradise. And it appears that the trend is still in full swing this year.
Following Emma Roberts’ Maybe I Do, Your Place or Mine is coming to Netflix on February 10, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Is the Netflix Film ‘Your Place or Mine’ an Adaptation of a Book?
You might think that Your Place or Mine is based on a book, given that it’s starring and produced by Reese Witherspoon, who has a keen eye for adapting novels featured in her famed book club.

In August 2020, Netflix acquired a movie via Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production company based on a book, namely Sarah Haywood’s New York Times Bestseller, The Cactus.
There are a few books on Amazon named Your Place or Mine, but they are not the inspiration for the movie.
Your Place or Mine is based on an original screenplay from writer/director Aline Brosh McKenna. She is the screenwriter behind movies like The Devil Wears Prada (2006) and 27 Dresses (2008).
“We have been looking for the right feature opportunities to collaborate with Ted Sarandos, Scott Stuber and the entire team at Netflix for a while and we couldn’t be more excited to be working with them on these two romantic comedies,” said Witherspoon about her partnership with Netflix.
“Both Sarah Haywood’s and Aline Brosh McKenna’s stories blend everything we love about traditional RomComs with strong, smart and determined female leads.”

A week before its release, Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher showed their chemistry on the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of Your Place or Mine held at the Regency Village Theater.
Ashton looked neat in a black blazer suit with a dark blue chambray shirt and a brown belt as he towered over his on-screen partner Witherspoon, who opted for a chic aqua blue peplum dress.
Reese wore a Valentino creation that featured a strapless corset top and a notched neckline that allowed her to show a glimpse of cleavage. It also had a pleated hem, finished with a knee-length skirt with a side slit.
Boosting her 5’2” height, the Man in the Moon actress slipped her pedicured feet into a pair of black heels by Aquazzura. These sandals have open toes, thin toe straps, and strappy ankles set on slender stiletto heels.
To create the look, Reese worked with her trusted stylist Petra Flannery, who has also dressed high-profile celebrities like Claire Danes, Emilia Clarke, Emma Stone, and Zoe Saldana.

The Fear actress kept things classy with diamond stud earrings, a couple of diamond rings, and a statement beaded cuff bracelet by David Webb.
When it came to her glam, hairstylist Lona Maria Vigi and makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan Fisher gave her a classic Witherspoon beauty look. She had her blonde tresses styled in loose waves with a deep side part and her features were highlighted with smokey pink eyeshadow, mascara, and glossy pink lipstick.

What Is Your Place Or Mine About?
Your Place or Mine follows longtime best friends and complete opposites Debbie (Witherspoon) and Peter (Kutcher), who later realize that their longstanding platonic love for each other has become romantic.
Debbie is a single mom and an accountant who loves living a routine-oriented lifestyle with her son Jack (Wesley Kimmel) in Los Angeles. Contrary to Debbie, Peter is a marketing executive and aspiring writer who enjoys a changing lifestyle in New York City.

However, all that changes when they decide to switch lives and swap places for a week. While Peter volunteers to watch over Debbie’s son in LA, Debbie is living solo in Peter’s NYC apartment and later meets Theo (Jesse Williams).
Peter witnesses the two get intimate through his camera system and begins to be jealous of her newfound relationship with him. He later realizes that Debbie is more than just a friend to him.

The official synopsis reads: “Debbie (Reese Witherspoon) and Peter (Ashton Kutcher) are best friends and total opposites. She craves routine with her son in LA; he thrives on change in NY. When they swap houses and lives for a week they discover what they think they want might not be what they really need.”
On Working with Each Other
Both Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon rose to prominence in the early 2000s with their hit rom-com movies.
In an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, Kutcher revealed he has always wanted to work with the Legally Blonde star.
“Through the years, with every romantic comedy that I thought about doing, I would always ask if Reese was available. I’ve wanted to work with her my entire career.”

With regards to building their on-screen chemistry, Reese told THR: “We really worked on it, we talked every day for the month leading up to it.”
“We sent each other videos every single day so that we got to know each other so that by the time we got to set, he knew my dog’s name, he knew all of my kids, I’d seen him get his coffee.”
Kutcher agreed, saying, “you can tell on screen” if the chemistry will be believable. He added that he “had more fun making this than maybe anything I’ve ever made as an actor, because every single day I showed up to work I had fun.”

Your Place or Mine is written, co-produced, and directed by Aline Brosh McKenna in her directorial debut. She also penned several hit movies, including The Devil Wears Prada, We Bought Zoo, and 27 Dresses.
Witherspoon serves as a co-producer on the film through her Hello Sunshine media company alongside actor Jason Bateman, Michael Costigan, and Lauren Neustadter.
McKenna told The Hollywood Reporter that it was her dream to work with Witherspoon. It was “one of my dreams to work with her, and get to work with her as a director.”
“Every day she comes up with funny ideas, she makes everything better. And then Ashton was just a dream, I was so glad that he wanted to do the movie. We had the best time. You can tell we’re having fun.”
