She finished filming the 2016 biographical war film Hacksaw Ridge two months earlier. In it, she starred as nurse Dorothy Schutte, the love interest of Andrew Garfield’s character, Desmond Doss.

Teresa Palmer was so eager to secure a role in the movie that she auditioned through her iPhone and sent the recording to Mel Gibson.

“I was really wanting this role. I auditioned for it, I put myself down on tape just on an iPhone, sent it in and never heard anything for three months,” she said in an interview with Channel Nine’s Today Extra.

Despite not hearing back for three months, Gibson eventually contacted Palmer via Skype to inform her that she had landed the part of Dorothy, Doss’s wife.

“I ended up having a Skype meeting with [Mel Gibson] kind of out of the blue. And he told me during the Skype that I was Dorothy. It was really special,” she added.

“I did a lot of research. I listened to audiotapes of hers, read love stories that they wrote to each other, and then also just, gosh, so much. The accent; the accent was really the one that I had to work on. And not only did I have to have this Lynchburg, Virginia, 1940s accent, I also listened to the way she sounded. And I wanted to sound just like her, so I had to fully change the tone of my voice as well. So it was a process.”
