As one of the honorees at the 2024 Time 100 Gala, Dua Lipa made a statement with her shimmering, plunging Chanel gown modeled after Jane Birkin’s dress from the 1969 Artists Union’s Gala in Paris.
The 2024 Time 100 List
The annual Time 100 Gala honors the top 100 most influential people of the year, including celebrities, innovators, and leaders in various fields. Aside from Lipa, Kylie Minogue, Taraji P. Henson, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Maya Rudolph, Fantasia Barrino, Kelly Ripa, America Ferrera, and Tory Burch were also recognized in different categories.
One of the four worldwide covers of the Time 100 issue features Dua Lipa. At the gala, the 28-year-old singer performed three songs from her upcoming third studio album, Radical Optimism, set to drop on May 3.

The Custom Dress’s Intricate Details
Making her presence felt, the Barbie actress graced the red carpet gala, looking elegant in a ladylike gown created for her by Chanel.
She flaunted her amazingly fit figure in the see-through white floral guipure lace dress, intricately embroidered with 45,000 gleaming tiny aluminum rings and crystals. I can’t help but think how hefty the dress must have been. Not surprisingly, it reportedly took a thousand hours to make.
The wide, low-cut neckline that fell a few inches below her sternum drew attention to her cleavage. It had a black bow accent, adorned with a crystal-and-resin floral brooch, lending a coquette feel to the look.

Below the plunging neckline was a keyhole cutout that exposed Dua’s belly button piercing. The dress’s long sleeves and floor-sweeping hem counterbalanced its bold cuts.
I love how meticulously constructed it is and how well it accentuates Dua Lipa’s silhouette. It’s definitely not something anyone can pull off, in my opinion.

Dua Lipa’s Inspiration for Her Time 100 Gala Look
If you think the dress looks familiar, you’re not alone; I also noticed its resemblance to her 2024 Grammy dress.
Following the gala, Dua took to her Instagram Story to share the inspiration behind her daring gown.
She posted a black-and-white photo of British-French actress-singer Jane Birkin from the 1969 Artists Union’s Gala wearing a similar dress by Italian fashion designer Emilio Pucci cut from white floral lace with a navel-deep plunging neckline and a black accent right above the belly button. “My inspo for last nights dress,” she captioned her post.

This is not the first time Dua Lipa has worn a Chanel creation inspired by or worn by celebrities of the bygone era. At last year’s Met Gala, she also wore the same Chanel gown that wealthy model Claudia Schiffer originally modeled at the Chanel Fall/Winter 1992 Haute Couture show.
Accessories and Finishing Touches
Although the outfit didn’t need any more sparkle, her longtime stylist Lorenzo Posocco added a few from Tiffany & Co. A double-strand diamond lariat necklace adorned her neck, drawing further attention to her decolletage, while a pair of $35,300 Tiffany Edge Drop Earrings in platinum and 18k yellow gold with rows of round brilliant diamonds weighing 3.27 carats dangled from her ears.
She also wore a $22,300 Tiffany Victoria Alternating Ring in platinum with marquise and round brilliant diamonds, a $6,900 Tiffany Knot Double Row Ring in 18k white gold with 0.31ct. round brilliant diamonds, and a $20,500 Tiffany Forever Band Ring in platinum with a full circle of round brilliant diamonds weighing 2.86ct.
Dua Lipa also showed off her “PATIENCE” hand tattoo, first revealed in an Instagram post in 2017. She later elaborated that the tattoo reminds her to stay calm and patient.

I would have probably liked Dua’s look more if she had her burgundy hair styled in a neat updo, but Peter Lux decided to fashion the singer’s tresses in loose waves flowing around her shoulders.
Katie Jane Hughes, meanwhile, highlighted her striking features with glittery eye-makeup, rosy blush, fluttery eyelashes, and dark pink lipstick.

Radical Optimism Promotion
A day before attending the gala, Dua Lipa made the rounds in the media circuit to promote her upcoming third studio album, Radical Optimism—her first in four years since Future Nostalgia.
The album includes “Houdini,” the lead single released in November 2023, and “Training Season,” released in February 2024.
Dropping by the Hard Rock Café, Dua Lipa turned heads in an oversized black leather trench coat with strong shoulders and a high neck from denim brand Khaite’s Fall 2024 collection.

Underneath, she wore the $1,350 Celine Triomphe loose-fitting polo shirt with Triomphe embroidery in light blue striped wool and light-washed straight-leg jeans.
Elevating the casual look, Dua Lipa pulled her red hair in a neat center-parted ponytail, showing off her $18,000 Tiffany HardWear Large Link Earrings in 18k white gold with 1.18ct. pave round brilliant diamonds.
She carried her essentials in a silver studded bag and completed her look with black croc pointed-toe pumps.
