When Olivia Wilde and Margaret Zhang arrived at the 2023 Met Gala in New York City, they made fashion history by inadvertently “twinning” in the same iconic Chloé silhouette.
Both women chose to honor the “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” theme with a floor-length homage to the designer’s legendary 1983 “Violin” dress.
While the Don’t Worry Darling director opted for a modern reinterpretation in stark white styled with gold platform heels, Vogue China editor Margaret Zhang stayed true to the original 1983 archive aesthetic in classic black.

They had the same idea and turned the original cocktail dress into a floor-length one, but Zhang’s had gold embellishments on the hem that matched the glittering gold violin panel in the center.
While Wilde had the gold Wonder Woman-esque arm cuffs and the original design had gloves, Zhang opted for none but added a flowing cape instead.

The American actress had her blonde hair cascading in soft glam waves. Meanwhile, the then-29-year-old editor took an edgier approach, with electric-blue hair and dark sunglasses reminiscent of Karl Lagerfeld’s favorite accessory.
As for footwear, both women leaned into platform heels to support the drama of the floor-length gowns—Olivia Wilde in gold platforms that echoed the metallic detailing of her look, and Margaret Zhang in sleek black platform pumps that grounded her archival-inspired silhouette.

According to the Evening Standard, this is the first time that a fashion faux pas like this happened at the annual star-studded event. But both Olivia Wilde and Margaret Zhang seemed to take it in stride, taking to Instagram to react to their twinning outfits.
Olivia Wilde acknowledged it on her Instagram Story with the caption: “Great minds.” She added, “If you’re gonna twin with anyone, make it @margaretzhang.”
Margaret Zhang also responded by reposting the story and writing, “CUE THE STRINGS.”

The theme for that year’s Met Gala was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, honoring the late designer, who worked at several major fashion houses, including Chloé, Fendi, Balmain, and Chanel. The event’s official co-chairs were Roger Federer, Penélope Cruz, Dua Lipa, and Michaela Coel.
Although Olivia Wilde and Margaret Zhang had the same idea, they each added their own personal touch to the iconic garment and confidently ascended the carpeted steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in their own distinct style.
That said, whose interpretation of the iconic Chloé Violin dress do you prefer?
