Carson later reflected on how the project first came to her back in 2017, when director Liz Allen handed her an early draft of Purple Hearts and asked her to come on board not just as an actress, but as a creative partner.

At the time, Carson was filming Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists in Portland, where Allen happened to overhear her singing between takes — a moment that ultimately convinced the director she had found her lead.

“Five years later,” Carson said, “after shooting the film, writing the soundtrack, and producing it, it’s been the most incredible journey.”

The day after, they professed their love. Then he was deployed. And the next day was the love scene.” With such an accelerated shooting schedule, the two had to build trust quickly to make the relationship feel authentic.
