Katy Perry Debuts Whimsical Mushroom Heels and Cult Gaia Cutout Dress at MAGIC Las Vegas

When Katy Perry arrived at the Las Vegas Convention Center on August 9, 2022, she brought a monochromatic masterclass to the MAGIC Las Vegas fashion trade show.

Serving as the event’s opening keynote speaker, the entrepreneur and American Idol judge utilized the platform to discuss the evolution of her namesake footwear brand, her creative process, and her then-active residency in the city.

Dressed in a striking crimson ensemble, Perry’s appearance coincided with a pivotal era for her business—a time when she was transitioning into full independent ownership of the Katy Perry Collection.

Perry opted for a bold, textural silhouette from the LA-based label Cult Gaia. Her $498 “Salima” dress—a tape yarn knit design—is defined by its strategic midriff cutouts and a dramatic open back.

The garment’s architectural details include a halter-style bodice knotted at the waist and a brushed brass choker that doubles as the neckline. Notably, the dress features removable voluminous sleeves that attach directly to the hardware, transitioning the look from a sculptural long-sleeve piece to a sleek midi. Ribbed cuffs and a form-fitting skirt completed the avant-garde aesthetic.

The Roar hitmaker styled her already striking ensemble with minimal jewelry, wearing just a pair of chunky gold earrings and a matching ring. Notably missing was her engagement ring from fiancé Orlando Bloom.

As for her glam look, Taylor Schilling’s lookalike coiffed her dark tresses into a chic updo with face-framing wisps.

She then applied a swipe of bold red lip color to match her show-stopping dress and added smoky eyeshadow, mascara, and a sweep of blush on her cheeks.

While her dress commanded attention, her choice of footwear stole the spotlight.

The Dark Horse singer later presented her Spring 2023 footwear collection at PROJECT.

Posing for photos on the red carpet, Katy Perry showcased a selection of head-turning shoe designs, ranging from playful sandals and colorful sneakers to studded boots and vibrant pumps.

Katy Perry on Buying Back Her Own Shoe Brand

The singer’s namesake brand was launched in 2017. It was co-owned and operated by the US arm of apparel manufacturer and brand owner Global Brands Group for five years.

After learning that GBG USA Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2021, Katy Perry decided to buy the Katy Perry Collections footwear label outright from GBG.

“We got a call, and I had to buy it in a week,” she said at the event. “I took about four to five people at Global Brands Group, and I just bought all the stock. We did some sales, and then we started working on the next collection.”

In a phone interview with Footwear News, Perry said she “was faced with the choices of fading away into obscurity with this line that I have worked so hard on for five years and that is just kind of coming out of its infancy and finding its strengths. Or just leveling up.”

“I just decided to take complete ownership and level up, find great partners, develop my team, and put to practice all of the education I have learned—and just be that CEO boss b*tch that I want to be.”
