Hosted by Pitbull for the second year in a row, the 42nd annual American Music Awards took place at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles on November 23, 2014.
The red carpet captured a distinctly mid-2010s fashion mood: sheer panels, high slits, body-conscious gowns, metallic finishes, and statement heels that were meant to be seen.

The night had plenty of memorable music moments, from Taylor Swift opening the show with “Blank Space” to Selena Gomez’s emotional performance of “The Heart Wants What It Wants.” But the red carpet remains just as revealing as a style record, showing how celebrities used shoes to sharpen, soften, or finish some of the era’s most recognizable evening looks.
The strongest looks were not just about gowns. Jennifer Lopez used crystal Christian Louboutin pumps to echo the shimmer of her blush Reem Acra dress, Taylor Swift kept her Jimmy Choo heels nearly invisible beneath emerald Michael Kors, Selena Gomez let black Giorgio Armani sandals quietly support her Armani Privé gown, and Jordin Sparks and Julianne Hough showed how strappy sandals can change the mood of a metallic red-carpet look.
Jennifer Lopez Glowed in Reem Acra With Christian Louboutin “Pigalle Strass” Pumps
Jennifer Lopez’s onstage performance with Iggy Azalea was sizzling hot, but her red carpet look was subtle and sweet.

Dressed in a Reem Acra Spring 2015 dress in a gorgeous soft blush color, the singer’s enviable abs and shoulders were showcased by the frock’s crisscrossing fabric.

The gown was revealing, but the soft blush color and draped crisscross construction gave it a lighter, more romantic finish.
She finished the look with an Oroton “Frieze” clutch and Christian Louboutin “Pigalle Strass” pumps, using the crystal-covered pointed stilettos to extend the gown’s soft shimmer without overpowering it.

Kate Beckinsale Made White Look Bold in Kaufmanfranco and Bulgari High Jewelry
Kate Beckinsale chose a sleek white Kaufmanfranco gown with a plunging neckline, open back, and side cutouts, turning a minimalist color into one of the night’s more daring silhouettes.

She balanced the revealing cut with polished accessories: a Lee Savage “Stack” clutch and a Bulgari High Jewelry Serpenti pavé diamond necklace that gave the look its strongest luxury accent.

Rita Ora Lit Up the Red Carpet in Zac Posen’s Sunshine-Yellow Gown
Rita Ora embraced color in a sunshine-yellow Zac Posen strapless gown with sculptural pleating and a sweeping train. Against a red carpet dominated by black, metallic, and blush tones, the vibrant yellow immediately stood out.

While the color was bold, the gown’s sculptural pleating and dramatic train kept the overall effect refined rather than playful. Rita finished with a quirky but sleek top knot to keep the look playful.

Taylor Swift Paired an Emerald Michael Kors Gown With Jimmy Choo Heels
Taylor Swift chose a custom emerald Michael Kors gown with sheer paneling, an illusion neckline, and a waist cutout that highlighted the design’s clean, elongated lines.

The emerald shade complemented the sleek silhouette, while matching Jimmy Choo heels remained largely hidden beneath the hem, creating a seamless head-to-toe look instead of drawing attention away from the dress.

Taylor styled the full-length gown with Chimento earrings and rings from Casa Reale and Le Vian.

Selena Gomez Embraced Dark Glamour in Armani Privé and Giorgio Armani Sandals
Selena Gomez leaned into a darker red-carpet mood in a black Armani Privé gown with a backless silhouette, velvet paneling, and a sleek floor-length finish.
The look had a gothic edge without feeling costume-like, especially with her center-parted updo, deep red lipstick, Neil Lane jewelry, and barely visible Giorgio Armani sandals beneath the hem.

She styled the gown with deep red lipstick, a center-parted updo, Neil Lane geometric earrings, and gold chain cuffs, keeping the overall mood controlled and grown-up without distracting from the dress’s stark silhouette.

The restrained styling foreshadowed the emotional performance of “The Heart Wants What It Wants” that followed later in the ceremony, making the look feel especially cohesive.

The shoe detail became clearer in close-up: her black Giorgio Armani sandals featured suede straps, clear PVC bands, and a sculptural T-strap shape that matched the gown’s restrained, architectural mood.

The sandals gave the look a subtle modern edge, with the transparent panels making the black straps appear lighter beneath the floor-length gown.

The Jenner and Kardashian Sisters Brought Three Distinct Designer Shoe Moments
Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner, and Khloé Kardashian each interpreted the evening’s glamorous dress code differently, but all three relied on sharply pointed designer footwear to complete their looks.
Kendall and Kylie Jenner leaned into the revealing, leg-focused silhouettes that defined much of the 2014 AMAs red carpet.
They arrived with Khloé Kardashian, whose black Versus Versace dress took a sharper route with an asymmetrical hemline, gold lion-head Plexi ring detail, and black Christian Louboutin “So Kate” pumps.

Fresh off being named the new face of Estée Lauder, Kendall Jenner arrived in a daring Yigal Azrouël Spring 2014 design that captured the body-conscious mood defining mid-2010s red carpets.

The sheer eyelet dress featured dramatic side cutouts and was layered over high-waisted black briefs, creating an architectural silhouette that blurred the line between ready-to-wear and eveningwear.
The look divided opinion at the time, but it also reflected the era’s embrace of sheer fabrics, strategic cutouts, and confidently revealing silhouettes.

Kendall kept the styling understated, allowing the sculptural dress and Jean-Michel Cazabat mesh pumps to remain the focal points.

The youngest of the Jenner sisters, Kylie, chose an oxblood satin gown from Alexandre Vauthier’s Spring 2014 collection that was every bit as daring as Kendall’s look.
The then-17-year-old wore a backless design with a plunging neckline and a dramatic thigh-high slit, while the fluid satin fabric softened the gown’s sharply cut silhouette and rich oxblood hue.

Alexandre Vauthier’s sharply cut satin gown emphasized long, clean lines, while Tamara Mellon’s fishnet pumps reinforced the outfit’s edgy direction.
Like Kendall, Kylie also wore a pair of mesh pumps featuring a caged silhouette with leather vamps, pointed toes, back zipper fastenings, and 4.25-inch heels.
Her Tamara Mellon shoes added a tougher, graphic finish, though a slimmer sandal would have softened the gown’s fluid satin drape.

Khloé Kardashian donned an asymmetrical sleeveless crepe dress by Versus Versace featuring gold-lion-head-detailed plastic discs.

She styled the knee-length dress with a selection of gold jewelry and black “So Kate” leather pumps by Christian Louboutin.

Jordin Sparks Balanced a Gold Halston Heritage Gown With Dolce & Gabbana Sandals

Jordin Sparks embraced warm metallic glamour in a gold sequined Halston Heritage gown featuring a plunging halter neckline, a knotted waist, and a thigh-high slit.
Rather than adding more sparkle, she grounded the look with understated black Dolce & Gabbana strappy sandals that kept the focus on the dress while adding clean architectural lines at the foot.

Orka Mesic jewelry complemented the gown’s metallic finish, while the black Dolce & Gabbana sandals created a subtle contrast.

Their slim crisscross straps and double ankle straps echoed the gown’s clean silhouette instead of competing with its sequins.

The Halston Heritage gown combined fluid draping with a twisted waist detail, while the hidden back zipper and front hook-and-bar closure kept the fit clean.
Her black Dolce & Gabbana sandals featured open toes, crisscross straps, double ankle straps with goldtone buckles, covered heel counters, and suede-covered stiletto heels.

Julianne Hough Shined in Zuhair Murad With Gold Tamara Mellon “Fatale” Sandals

While Jordin Sparks relied on black sandals to balance a shimmering gown, Julianne Hough leaned into a warmer palette.
Her coral Zuhair Murad Resort 2015 gown was finished with mirrored gold Tamara Mellon “Fatale” sandals, creating a monochromatic effect that elongated the leg and echoed the gown’s intricate beaded detailing.

Hough’s coral Zuhair Murad Resort 2015 gown featured a plunging beaded neckline, an open back, and a dramatic thigh-high slit.
The vibrant color made the metallic gold sandals feel like a natural extension of the outfit rather than a separate statement piece.

Jacqui Aiche jewelry, a Lee Savage clutch, and delicate gold accents reinforced the warm color palette without distracting from the gown’s intricate embellishment or the reflective finish of the Tamara Mellon heels.

The mirrored gold Tamara Mellon “Fatale” sandals tied the look together with slim straps, a back-zip closure, and a metallic finish that echoed the gown’s embellishment without weighing it down.

The cutout “Fatale” sandals were set on 105 mm heels, adding height while keeping the foot visually open.

Zendaya Made a Bold Fashion Statement in Metallic Georgine and Gucci Heels
Zendaya showed off her toned midriff and a new nose ring in a brushed-metallic trench coat from the Georgine Spring 2015 collection, paired with matching palazzo pants.

She completed the look with a green leather bandeau top and Gucci heels. The metallic trench-and-trouser combination divided opinion at the time, but it reflected Zendaya’s willingness to experiment with proportions and tailoring long before that became her signature red-carpet strength.

Heidi Klum Wore Versace From Head to Toe With Colorful Lucite Heels
Heidi Klum wore a Versace Spring 2015 crop top and coordinating skirt linked by crystal-mesh bands, creating one of the night’s boldest head-to-toe runway looks.

The outfit’s most interesting detail was below the hem: colorful Versace Lucite heels that repeated the collection’s futuristic, high-shine mood.

Nicki Minaj Kept It Classic in Alexander Wang and Manolo Blahnik Pumps
Nicki Minaj kept things sleek in a black Alexander Wang Spring 2015 mini dress, offering a minimalist contrast to many of the night’s embellished gowns.

The high-neck Alexander Wang Spring 2015 mini dress featured side cutouts and a sculptural shape, while her black Manolo Blahnik pumps kept the styling clean and direct.

Pointed Manolo Blahnik pumps completed the monochromatic look, reinforcing the clean, architectural lines of the Alexander Wang design without competing for attention.

Meghan Trainor Turned Her Lulu Guinness Lips Clutch Into a Playful Pop Statement
Meghan Trainor brought a playful pop sensibility to the 2014 American Music Awards, using accessories as clearly as fashion pieces.

The clearest example was her Swarovski-crystal red lips clutch by Lulu Guinness, a cheeky nod to “Lips Are Movin” that made the accessory part of the performance around the outfit.
She playfully posed with it, blew kisses with it, and held it up to the cameras as if it were her own pair of lips. The American singer-songwriter took pictures with other celebrities, including British singer Katy Tiz and Ariana Grande’s brother, Frankie J. Grande, and used the clutch as the basis for their own duck-lipped faces.

The clutch gave the look its most memorable visual hook, but her glittery Blue by Betsey Johnson “Gala” pumps also deserve attention for carrying the same playful tone down to the shoes.

The clutch accessorized Meghan’s Ted Baker London embroidered-lace dress with a satin skirt, while rings, bracelets, earrings, and glittery black bow platform heels completed the look.

Meghan Trainor’s shoes are the Blue by Betsey Johnson “Gala” pumps.

Elizabeth Banks Brightened the Red Carpet in Peter Pilotto and Nicholas Kirkwood “Savara” Sandals
Elizabeth Banks embraced a brighter, more playful side of red-carpet dressing at the 2014 American Music Awards, pairing a vibrant Peter Pilotto mini dress with sculptural red Nicholas Kirkwood “Savara” sandals.

Her Peter Pilotto Spring 2015 mini dress brought a brighter, more graphic mood than the polished gowns she had been wearing during promotion for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1.
The hot-pink dress featured red and orange plexiglass embellishments, laser-cut detailing, pleated skirt panels, and a plunging neckline, giving the short silhouette a sharp, graphic finish.
Her side-swept, partly braided blonde hair and coral-red lip color reinforced the playful mood without making the look feel overly styled.

Elizabeth finished the look with a Casa Reale ring, Melissa Kaye Jewelry earrings, a gunmetal Reece Hudson clutch, and glossy red Nicholas Kirkwood “Savara” sandals.
The sandals brought the strongest shoe detail: curved red patent straps, clear PVC sides, and sculpted heels measuring about 4 inches.

Fergie Elevated a Halston Heritage Gown With Versus Versace Triple-Clasp Sandals
Fergie embraced understated glamour at the 2014 American Music Awards in a sleek Halston Heritage gown, finishing the look with striking Versus Versace triple-clasp sandals that added a bold, modern edge.

Fergie chose a black Halston Heritage halter gown with a thigh-high slit, back cutout, and metallic accents at the waist and neckline.

Loose waves and nude lipstick kept the styling simple, leaving the gown’s slit and the Versus Versace sandals to carry the look.

Her strappy Versus Versace sandals added the sharpest detail. We spotted the same sandals on Bella Thorne a few weeks earlier.
The sandals featured triple ankle straps with gold-tone clasps, toe straps, back zipper fastenings, and 4-inch heels, giving the black gown a tougher Versace finish.
For her “L.A. Love” performance, Fergie shifted into a Jean Paul Gaultier long-sleeved bodysuit with gold fingerless gloves and high-top wedge sneakers with gold shin guards, trading red-carpet polish for stagewear impact.
