You can always trust Marion Cotillard to exude sheer elegance no matter what she wears. It could be a crystal-embellished dress that looks at home at a prestigious event or a billowy flared shirt that showcases effortless sophistication.
But no matter the occasion, she always adds one thing that provides a playful element or brings a dose of cool edge to her look. It could be a pair of lizard boots or sculptural metallic gold pumps, or she could one day choose to wear colorful stripes or abstract print.
For the 2023 Met Gala, the Academy Award winner packed a colorful punch with punk pink hair while wearing a vintage Chanel look in honor of the late great designer Karl Lagerfeld.

Just like Nicole Kidman, Kristen Stewart, and Gisele Bundchen, Cotillard pulled from the archives and wore what she told WWD was “a piece of art with Chanel codes.”
The piece of art in question is a Chanel Fall 2007 Haute Couture dress embroidered with silver sequins and embellished with draped flounces.
As Cotillard told WWD, “The bows on the shoulders and obviously the mastering of the atelier’s craftsmanship, [that’s what] make this dress so special.”
The Midnight in Paris actress said that it was “iconic” for her as she wore the same dress when she won Best Actress for La Vie en Rose at the 2008 British Academy Film Awards, and “it is until today one of [her] favorite dresses ever.”

As for her beauty look, she went for shimmering eye makeup and a coral pink lip. Her medium-length brunette hair was chopped and slashed into a bowl cut and dyed a shocking pink, which added a punk edge to her ensemble.
It had echoes of the 1960s mod girl, the 1970s rebel without a cause, the 1990s grunge spirit, or even a 2010s-era It girl.
Glittering jewels and a pair of pointy-toe pumps provided the finishing touches to her look.

When asked about her first meeting with Karl Lagerfeld, Cotillard replied, “He wanted to take a picture of me so I went to his famous studio in Paris Rue de Lille. I felt very lucky that he got interested in me back then. That he believed in me when I started in this world of cinema.”
As for her favorite memory with the designer, she shared with WWD: “At the Chanel show in 2018, it was really the first time I sat with him and had a discussion with him. His presence was so simple and deep.”
“He was very curious to know the person he had in front of him,” she continued. “We talked about movies and art. When he was looking at you, he was really looking at you, he was fully present.”

This year’s Met Gala theme was Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, which paid homage to the iconic designer and his illustrious career.
The official event co-chairs were Penelope Cruz, Roger Federer, Michaela Coel, and Dua Lipa.
