Following the commercial and critical success of the 2019 dark comedy mystery film Knives Out, which grossed $311.4 million worldwide on a $40 million budget, Netflix purchased the rights to produce two Knives Out sequels for $469 million, with director Rian Johnson and lead star Daniel Craig returning to the franchise.

According to Variety, Daniel Craig will receive over $100 million to star in the two sequels to Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out.”

Nearly three years after Knives Out was originally released, fans of the movie are finally getting a standalone sequel.

Officially titled Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, the movie features a star-studded cast and a new murder mystery case set in Greece.

It is scheduled to have a one-week limited theatrical release on November 23, before its streaming release on December 23, by Netflix.

Why Is The Knives Out Sequel Called Glass Onion?

As soon as director Rian Johnson announced that the previously untitled Knives Out sequel will be called Glass Onion, many were left confused about the meaning behind it.

In an interview with Netflix Tudum, Johnson revealed that Glass Onion was inspired by The Beatles’ 1968 song of the same name.

“I’m always fishing for something fun that Blanc can grab onto as an overwrought metaphor that he can beat to death,” he explained.

“This is all in plain sight from the very start. So, the idea of glass came to me, something that’s clear. I’ll be very honest. I literally got out my iPhone and searched my music library with the word glass. ‘There’s got to be some good glass songs.’ I was like, ‘Oh, is it glass fortress? Is it a glass castle? Is it a glass man?’ The first thing that came up, because I’m a huge Beatles fan, is ‘Glass Onion.’”

What Is Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery About?

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is a follow-up to the 2019 dark comedy mystery Knives Out. It follows detective Benoit Blanc to Greece as he solves a new murder mystery that takes place during tech billionaire Miles Bron’s getaway on his private Greek island with his friends.

Daniel Craig is reprising his role as Benoit Blanc in Glass Onion. It also stars an ensemble cast consisting of Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Leslie Odom Jr., Dave Bautista, Ethan Hawke, and Kate Hudson.

Glass Onion Will Center on Benoit Blanc

Director Rian Johnson revealed more details about what the fans can expect from the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

He told Tudum that while Benoit Blanc was “almost the antagonist in terms of just the story structure” in Knives Out, fans will “definitely get to know him a little bit better” in the upcoming whodunnit sequel.

“In the first one, because of the way it was structured, Marta, Ana de Armas’ character, was very much the protagonist. In a big way, Blanc was a threat,” he explained.

“Blanc was always outside of the sphere of our protagonist and was a little bit more of an enigma in the first movie. Whereas, in this one, Blanc gets an invitation to come to this murder mystery on this island. We’re very much meeting these people and getting into this world through his eyes.”

Last week, the stars of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery brought their fashion A-game to Madrid as they attended the premiere and photocall for their new film.

1. Kate Hudson in Halpern and Gabriela Hearst

Goldie Hawn’s daughter plays Birdie Jay, a former supermodel turned fashion designer, in Glass Onion.

And on Wednesday, the 43-year-old successful movie actress dressed the part in a sparkling ensemble by Halpern, a London-based label known for its distinctive sequined designs.

The Almost Famous star showcased her toned arms and abs in the daring number that featured a gathered purple bustier top with a multicolored sequin-embellished halter neck strap and a matching sash belt with a large center knot.

Although her shoes were hidden underneath her maxi skirt, Kate Hudson reportedly wore the Giuseppe Zanotti “Bebe Touch” platform sandals in nude leather.

Stylist Sophie Lopez gave Hudson’s look a glamorous touch with jewelry by Messika. She accessorized with the “Kandake” mono earrings, a sparkling bracelet, and a selection of rings, including the “Golden Shield” ring and the “Divine Enigma” ring.

When it came to her glam, the King St. Vodka founder wore shimmering pink eyeshadow, fluttery eyelashes, and pink lipstick, care of makeup artist Nao Gayoso.

Hairstylist David Carreiro pulled her blonde tresses into a low ponytail cascading down her back in waves.

Earlier in the day, the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days actress led the style pack at a photocall for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery held at the Hotel Rosewood Villa Magna in Madrid.

Danny Fujikawa’s fiancée made another style statement in a neon green power suit from Gabriela Hearst’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection.

Her tailored co-ords consisted of a “Stephanie” double-breasted blazer paired with “Vesta” high-rise flared trousers. Underneath, she wore a brown ribbed knit camisole.

Adding some glamorous edge to the look, Kate layered two chunky chain necklaces around her neck and wore sparkling stud earrings and a few rings.

The blonde bombshell let her golden locks cascade freely down her back in beachy waves while her features were highlighted with winged eyeliner and a nude lip gloss.

2. Janelle Monae in Robert Wun and Alfredo Martinez

Singer Janelle Monae, who plays tech entrepreneur Andi Brand in Glass Onion, made an entrance in an avant-garde look from Robert Wun’s Spring 2023 collection.

The 36-year-old Grammy nominee wore a metallic red ruffled gown reminiscent of an underwater coral. The sculptural bodice featured multiple layers of textured red fabric, while the bottom had a pleated black mini skirt and a long train.

Allowing her dramatic gown to take center stage, Janelle kept her accessories to a minimum. She wore just a pair of small white drop earrings and a few rings and teetered on towering patent black heels with thick platform soles.

Her short blonde curly hair was styled in an updo while her face was gorgeously made-up with winged eyeliner, smokey pink eyeshadow, and nude pink lipstick.

Showing her penchant for bold pieces, the Moonlight actress arrived at the Glass Onion photocall in another quirky ensemble, this time from Alfredo Martinez’s Spring 2023 collection.

Her monochromatic multi-layered outfit featured a one-shoulder design, black lace paneling, asymmetric stripes, and metallic silver pleats. It also had a mini skirt and a long white ribbon on one shoulder.

Injecting a hint of Parisian vibe to the look, Janelle wore a black beret over her curly hair. She further accessorized with drop earrings, some dainty rings, and a pair of minimalist black stiletto heels.

A swipe of bold red lip color, matching red nails, and winged eyeliner rounded out Janelle’s look.

3. Daniel Craig

Of course, detective Benoit Blanc himself attended the Madrid premiere of his new movie.

For the event, Daniel Craig wore a pale blue blazer with a white shirt underneath. He teamed the outfit with a navy tie, matching navy trousers, and black oxford shoes.

A pair of black sunglasses and a watch rounded out his dapper look.

4. Edward Norton

Edward Norton, who plays tech billionaire Miles Bron in the film, kept it simple in a navy co-ord. He wore a black tee underneath his blazer and completed his ensemble with black oxford shoes.

Norton brought along his wife of 10 years, Shauna Robertson, who looked pretty in a pleated blue dress with a halter neck and a cinched waist.

Wearing her long curly hair over her one shoulder, the Canadian film producer rounded out her outfit with a gold watch and minimalist sandals.

Earlier, the Primal Fear star went the casual route in a khaki green denim jacket and matching jeans. He wore a fitted white tee underneath, finished with casual white sneakers.
