The term tennis bracelet was coined by professional tennis player Christine Marie Evert, known as Chris Evert Lloyd from 1979 to 1987, who had a prolific career which stemmed from 1972 to 1989. She won 18 Grand Slam singles championships and three doubles titles.
During a ferocious match in the US Open in 1978, her diamond bracelet by George Bedewi broke and fell off her wrist due to the clasp on her bracelet snapping. The officials kindly stopped the match until the diamond bracelet was recovered. As of that day, a bracelet with handmade in line diamonds and secure clasps became known as the “Tennis Bracelet”.
The Serena sandals by Gianvito Rossi are inspired by the iconic tennis bracelet. They are designed with minimal straps, putting the focus on the sparkling Swarovski crystal-embellished chain that drapes elegantly around your ankle.
